Jurassic World Rebirth 4K UHD Review

“Jurassic World Rebirth” is easily the best in the series since the original “Jurassic Park.”

Written by David Koepp (who wrote the first 2 JP films), “Jurassic World Rebirth” begins in 2008 on the island Île Saint-Hubert where InGen is conducting genetic experiments on dinosaurs. To no surprise, a disaster occurs and the island is soon abandoned by InGen staff while the dinosaurs roam free. Cut to the year 2025 where Martin Krebs (a pharmaceutical executive for ParkerGenix) is looking to recruit a team to go to Île Saint-Hubert to collect dinosaur samples from 3 species- Mosasaurus, Titanosaurus and Quetzalcoatlus. The goal is that these samples could lead to a groundbreaking heart disease treatment. Martin ends up forming a team with Zora (an ex-military operative), Dr. Henry Loomis (a paleontologist), Duncan (expedition leader), among others that you know will end up as dino meals. While embarking on the dangerous mission, the crew encounter a sailboat in distress which houses a family (Reuben, his 2 daughters Teresa and Isabella, and Teresa’s boyfriend Xavier). They are rescued, but everyone soon finds themselves shipwrecked on the island. For everyone involved, it’s both a fight for survival on the dino-filled island and a quest to finish the mission so that it will not be in vain. Of course, that’s easier said than done…

After the cinematic dino dropping that was “Jurassic World: Dominion,” my interest in the Jurassic franchise was at an all-time low. When director Gareth Edwards was announced to helm the latest installment “Jurassic World Rebirth,” however, my interest was piqued. Having directed two of my favorite blockbuster films in the past 15 years with “Godzilla” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” my mind raced at the notion of Edwards entering the Jurassic universe. He did not disappoint. At this point, Gareth Edwards is the go-to guy for big sci-fi franchises. Yes, the addition of David Koepp (who has written all of the best Jurassic films) helped tremendously, but Edwards just has a fundamental understanding of what makes the franchises work. He brings back the sense of adventure and the intense and freaky feelings we all got when we saw “Jurassic Park” for the first time. He made ‘Rebirth’ a fun thrill ride (something that was sorely missing since “Jurassic Park”) packed with memorable action set pieces (especially the Mosasaurus encounter at sea and the Quetzalcoatlus nest sequence).

The new cast is also first rate. Scarlett Johansson was always going to be a great choice as the lead star, but it’s Jonathan Bailey who steals the show here and solidified himself as one of the best characters in the entire Jurassic franchise. Mahershala Ali (Duncan) shines here and has great chemistry with Johansson. The always reliable Rupert Friend also excels as the shady Martin. David Iacano amuses as the lazy but heroic Xavier.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.39:1 2160p. How does it look? In a word? Dynamite! Yes, that was cheesy, but the print is pristine and this is the best way to watch the film on home video.

Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? From the action to the dino roars, this is a deliciously dynamic Atmos track.
