Lois And Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman- The Complete Series Blu-ray Review

“Lois And Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman- The Complete Series” gets a new Blu-ray release to coincide with the release of 2025’s “Superman.”

When you think of Superman in the 90’s your mind probably goes to 4 things- “The Death Of Superman” comic book, “Superman: The Animated Series,” “Superman: The Wedding Album” comic event, and 1993’s ABC DC TV series “Lois And Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman.” Created by Deborah Joy LeVine, ‘Lois And Clark’ took a different approach to the Superman mythos by instead creating more of a romantic drama about Lois Lane and Clark Kent (and to an extent Superman). Is it what comic fans wanted? Probably not, but it was a unique approach to appeal to a wider audience. The show ran 4 seasons and largely focused on Clark Kent and Lois Lane working for The Daily Planet in Metropolis alongside Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant (for a single season), and, of course, Perry White. As is to be expected, other elements from the mythology are included here such as Lex Luthor, Jonathan and Martha Kent, and a host of villains like Metallo, The Toyman, The Prankster, and Mister Mxyzptlk.

Elsewhere in the series, viewers and fans can expect plots about Lex being infatuated with Lois, Intergang, Kryptonite, the time traveler villain Tempus, HG Wells, clones, Lex schemes, Kryptonian, New Krypton and Lord Nor, Lois and Clark’s marriage, Lois losing her memory, and Leslie (the new owner of The Daily Planet).

While not on the level of “Smallville” or “Adventures Of Superman,” there’s a lot to admire about “Lois And Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman.” Sure, some of the effects and humor is a bit hokey by today’s standards, but there’s something refreshing about this more character based series. There might be an overall lack of action and not as much Superman as some fans would like, but the series explores other aspects in more detail including Lois and Clark on assignments for The Daily Planet, Clark believing Clark is his real identity while Superman is his disguise, and Lois and Clark’s relationship and eventual marriage. The series really peaks in season 2 when the series embraces its comic roots more while also further exploring the developing romance between Lois and Clark. The rest of the seasons all have their moments (and not so memorable moments), but season 2 is where the show really shined. Season 2 also introduced us to the character of Tempus who would go on to become a fun recurring villain. The Tempus episodes also tend to be among the best of the entire series.

However one may feel about Dean Cain as a person, there’s no denying he does a good job portraying the mild mannered reporter Clark Kent and the heroic Superman. His winning smile, charismatic screen presence and fantastic chemistry with Teri Hatcher don’t hurt either. On the subject of Hatcher, she’s the real star of the show. She owns the screen whenever she’s on it and gives arguably one of the best (if not the best) live-action portrayals of Lois Lane. Lane Smith is note perfect as Perry White while John Shea is a memorable Lex Luthor. There’s a host of notable guest star appearances too by the likes of Drew Carey and James Earl Jones. Several noteworthy actors (like Denise Crosby and Bruce Campbell) also have their own character arcs for a stretch of episodes.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.33:1 1080p. How do the episodes look? The episodes have been remastered in hi-def and the series honestly looks as if it is brand new at times. The image quality is generally stunning outside of the special effects shots (which take a dip in quality).

Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The audio really soars like Superman himself. The music, action, and dialogue are supremely sharp.

Extras:
* Commentary on the “Pilot” episode by Dean Cain, creator Deborah Joy LeVine and director Robert Butler.
