The Accountant 2 4K UHD Review

Not even Jon Bernthal can save “The Accountant 2.”

In this sequel to 2016’s “The Accountant,” Financial Crimes Enforcement Director Raymond King is searching for a Salvadoran family. While trying to gather intel from an assassin named Anaïs, he is killed while Anaïs escapes. The next director (Marybeth Medina) takes over the case and recruits the help of Christian Wolff (the titular Accountant). The case is too big for Christian alone so he seeks out the help of his hitman brother Braxton and the group of autistic children hackers at Harbor Neuroscience. It seems Anaïs has a personal connection to the case and that the culprit everyone is after is a scumbag trafficker named Burke. Can Christian, Braxton, and company stop Burke and save some victims?

Back in 2016 “The Accountant” turned out to be a surprise thriller that was also noteworthy for its depiction of autism. Now, almost a decade later, the long-awaited sequel has at last been released, but everything you probably loved about the first film is absent here (including Anna Kendrick sadly).

What made “The Accountant” work was its attention to plotting and character. It was also an intense thriller with high stakes. For whatever reason “The Accountant 2” is entirely different in tone to a jarring degree. It’s less of a thriller and more of a comedic action film about brothers with a convoluted plot stuffed in. Some folks may like the change, but to me, it just felt like another action-comedy with shootouts and explosions. Ben Affleck’s intriguing Christian Wolff is almost taking a backseat here too as there are so many subplots floating about. Where the sequel does shine is with Braxton. The story’s further exploration of Christian and Braxton’s family dynamic is the lone saving grace here. Jon Bernthal’s Braxton carries the entire movie on his back and is really the only reason it’s even remotely watchable.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.39:1 2160p. How does it look? The 4K disc offers up a pristine print.

Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? You want an Atmos track for a film like this because you know an action movie needs a heavy duty track to handle the gunfire and explosions. Luckily, you get an absolute perfect Atmos track that handles all of the action perfectly.

The lone extra is a Digital Copy.
