A Minecraft Movie 4K UHD Review

“A Minecraft Movie” is shockingly fun.

Based on the mega popular video game by Mojang Studios, 2025’s “A Minecraft Movie” begins with a struggling everyman (Steve) discovering the Orb of Dominance and Earth Crystal which transports him to Overworld. Steve falls in love with this cube filled world and is able to build all sorts of wonders. He also encounters a portal to another world (the Nether) and finds himself being captured by its ruler (Malgosha). Knowing what Malgosha is capable of, Steve gives the items to his dog Dennis to stash elsewhere and they end up in the real world.

The story then shifts to other characters in the real world including Garrett (a former video game champ whose video game store is struggling to get business), Dawn (a real estate agent/mobile petting zoo owner), and siblings Henry and his big sister Natalie. To make a long story short, these 4 individuals end up in the Overworld after Garrett acquires the Orb and Crystal. When Malgosha learns of their reappearance, she sets Steve free and holds Dennis hostage until he can retrieve the items for her. From there on out, an epic adventure begins involving quests, crystals, creatures, deadly situations, bonding, and stopping Malgosha from ruining the Overworld.

Whether you are a fan of “Minecraft” or not, “A Minecraft Movie” is a bit of a miracle. The notion of making a movie based on a game involving pixelated cube building seems absurd, but director Jared Hess figured it out. Yes, some critics and fans have written this one off, but ultimately the movie became a global phenomenon that even sparked a bizarre Chicken Jockey movie theater trend. Really, Jared Hess did what any good auteur would do- he made it his own. He mixes fantasy adventure films of the 80’s and 90’s mixed with his own comedic sensibilities (think “Napoleon Dynamite”). There are so many weird elements here from Nitwit wandering into the human world to the musical numbers, but it somehow all works. Viewers are taken on a wild ride into the world of “Minecraft,” but it’s not all just whimsical humor and action. Hess and the team of writers also give the film a surprising emotional center with themes about friendship, creativity, and living in the real world.

As good as Hess is at bringing this world to life, “A Minecraft Movie” would not work at all were it not for the cast. Jack Black reunites with Hess after collaborating on the underrated cult comedy “Nacho Libre.” The result? A match made in heaven. Jack Black injects the movie with pure energy as Steve and steals the entire film. His bromance with Jason Momoa (who plays the broken down video game champ Garrett) is also entirely amusing. The rest of the cast (namely Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, and Sebastian Hansen) are also completely game for this weird flick in their respective roles.
