Looney Tunes Collector’s Vault: Volume 1 Blu-ray Review

Looney Tunes Collector’s Vault: Volume 1 offers up more gut-busting funny toons.

“Looney Tunes Collector’s Vault: Volume 1” is a new Blu-ray line that follows the Collector’s Choice series of Blu-ray releases. This 2-disc set contains a whopping 50 cartoons from the 30’s to 60’s (at a very affordable price tag). Disc 1 contains 25 Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons that have never been released on Blu-ray or DVD. The contents are as follows: “Bars And Stripes Forever,” “Beauty And The Beast,” “A Day At The Zoo,” “The Dixie Fryer,” “Double Or Mutton,” “Each Dawn I Crow,” “Easy Peckin’s,” “Feather Dusted,” “A Fox In A Fix,” “Good Night Elmer,” “The Goofy Gophers,” “I’d Love To Take Orders From You,” “A Kiddies Kitty,” “Let It Be Me,” “Of Fox And Hounds,” “Quackodile Tears,” “Ready, Woolen And Able,” “Robin Hood Makes Good,” “The Squawkin’ Hawk,” “Terrier-Stricken,” “Tweet And Lovely,” “Tweety’s Circus,” “Two’s A Crowd,” “Wild About Hurry,” and “Zip ‘n Snort.”

In these 25 animated shorts stories involve: prison dogs, a little girl and a toy soldier facing off against The Beast, a zoo tour, Foghorn Leghorn being viewed as dinner by 2 chicken hawks, Sam Sheepdog vs. Ralph Wolf (times two), John Rooster avoiding being Elmer Fudd’s meal, a fox vs. rooster, a fox contending with a bulldog over a chicken coop, Elmer Fudd struggling to sleep, gophers vs. a dog in a veggie garden, father and son scarecrows, a little girl adopting Sylvester, a crooner named Rooster Bingo getting in between of 2 lovers, George The Fox duping Willoughby the hound into doing bad things, Daffy failing to watch an egg, a fox interrupting squirrels playing Robin Hood, a young chicken hawk wanting a chicken dinner, Frisky Puppy vs. Claude Cat (times two), Sylvester inventing things to try to get past a bulldog to get to Tweety, Sylvester chasing Tweety in a circus, and Wile E. Coyote vs. Roadrunner (times two).

Disc 2 contains an additional 25 animated shorts making their HD debut. They are: “Ain’t She Tweet,” “Banty Raids,” “Birth Of A Notion,” “Bye, Bye Bluebeard,” “Cat-Tails For Two,” “Daffy Dilly,” “Daffy Duck And Egghead,” “Gee Whiz-z-z-z-z-z-z,” “Gonzales’ Tamales,” “Hare Conditioned,” “Hare Trigger,” “Hare Trimmed,” “Horton Hatches The Egg,” “Little Boy Boo,” “Much Ado About Nutting,” “Odor-able Kitty,” “Past Perfumance,” “Porky’s Duck Hunt,” “Rabbit Punch,” “Red Riding Hoodwinked,” “Rhapsody Rabbit,” “Snow Business,” “Tom Turk And Daffy,” “Two Crows From Tacos,” and “Zoom And Bored.” The plots of the above listed toons involve: Granny buying Tweety and Sylvester trying to get to Tweety, Foghorn Leghorn’s final toon, Daffy Duck staying with a mad scientist, a killer, a mouse and Porky Pig, 2 cats vs. Speedy Gonzales, Daffy Duck vs. a butler, Daffy Duck vs. Egghead, Wile E. Coyote chasing Roadrunner (times two), Speedy Gonzales vs. Sylvester, Bugs Bunny in danger of becoming taxidermy, Bugs stopping Yosemite Sam from robbing a train, Bugs stopping Yosemite Sam from robbing Granny, Horton watching over bird eggs, Foghorn Leghorn becoming a father figure, a squirrel with a coconut, Pepe Le Pew falling for a cat disguised as a skunk (times two), Porky going duck hunting, Bugs Bunny boxing, a spin on “Red Riding Hood” with some classic characters, Bugs being interrupted by a mouse during a piano concert, Sylvester and Tweety snowed in, Tom Turk, Porky and Daffy shenanigans, and 2 crows vs. a grasshopper.

No matter which disc you pop on, you’re getting good old fashioned “Looney Tunes” entertainment. Among my favorites on the first disc are Tex Avery’s gag-a-second “A Day At The Zoo” (“I’m a bad boy”), “A Kiddies Kitty” (which finds a little girl named Suzanne who destroys all of her toys adopting poor Sylvester), “Tweety’s Circus” (a classic Sylvester chasing Tweety short in a very visual circus setting), and the Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner double feature with “Wild About Hurry” and “Zip ‘n Snort”.

It can be argued that disc 2 has the superior shorts with the likes of “Birth Of A Notion” (which revolves around a Peter Lorre like mad scientist vs. Daffy), “Hare Trigger” (a good old western short with Bugs Bunny trying to stop Yosemite Sam from robbing a train”), Past Perfumance (which finds Pepe Le Pew falling for a cat disguised as a skunk on a film set), and the great “Rabbit Punch” which sees a towering Boxing champion challenging a heckler who just happens to be Bugs Bunny. Of course, viewers may have other favorites of the 50 in this set, but these are the ones that truly made me laugh. It’s a cliche to say, but “Looney Tunes” really is a timeless cartoon filled with iconic characters who continue to endure to this day. It’s wonderful to see Warner Archive restoring these classic shorts for the fans and hopefully we will see more volumes in the near future.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.37:1 1080p. How does it look? The restorations provide rich and vibrant colors for the cartoons. Admittedly, there are noticeable defects and some prints look better than others, but overall fans will be ecstatic about the results here.

Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Expect to hear some crackles, but overall the tracks are very lively and crisp.

No extras have been included.
