Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 Blu-ray Review

“Yellowstone” goes out with a whimper.

After a nearly 2 year break, “Yellowstone” returned late 2024 with the final 6 episodes. It’s no secret that the central story involves the death of John Dutton. The death was thought to be an alleged suicide, but Kayce and Beth suspect foul play by Jamie and or his associates. While in mourning and trying to find answers, the Dutton Ranch land woes continue on. Elsewhere in the season, there are plots about Rip transporting cattle to Texas, Kayce, Monica and Tate’s new home, Beth, Rip and Carter becoming a family unit, a ranch land plan involving Chief Rainwater, a shocking death (outside of John),and the appearance of a few familiar faces.

After becoming a TV juggernaut on Paramount Network, expectations were high for the final episodes of Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone.” Unfortunately, the mega-popular showrunner dropped the ball here.

First and foremost, Kevin Costner being absent left a huge void in this series. Not only does his absence make the show feel incomplete and or haphazardly written (or rewritten), but it feels like so much was left on the table without his involvement. This will always be a case of “What if?” as the show would have no doubt closed out in a better fashion with John Dutton around. Secondly, aside from a couple surprises, everything wraps up too nealy. We all knew we’d find out Jamie’s fate and it’s as predictable as you can imagine. Even though it was perhaps the best aspect of these final episodes, the Dutton Ranch land plot arc closed out in an obvious manner. It was a full circle moment we all saw coming. Lastly, it has to be said that it was positively shameful to see Taylor Sheridan insert his cocky character Travis into the season so much. Instead of focusing on wrapping other character arcs, Sheridan is front and center in the 2nd to last episode. It felt like a severe waste of time and it was the height of egotism.

On the plus side, there are 2 standouts in these final episodes- Kelly Reilly and Luke Grimes. Reilly has long been the fan favorite as the crazy yet strong Beth Dutton and fans will be happy to see her character arc here. Luke Grimes’ Kayce sometimes didn’t have the best of character arcs, but we see him become more front and center in these final 6 episodes. He really steps up.

“Yellowstone” may be over, but we know it’s not really the end as multiple spin-offs of central characters are in the works. Hopefully, those series fare better than this clumsy and disappointing final season.
