Sonic The Hedgehog 3 4K UHD Steelbook Review

Jim Carrey carries “Sonic The Hedgehog 3.”

Based on the hit Sega video game series and written by Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington, the third installment in the film franchise. For 50 years the alien being known as Shadow has been in suspended animation by the organization G.U.N., but has now broken out. While celebrating a family party with Tom and Maddie, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles find themselves being recruited by G.U.N. to capture the dangerous Shadow. They fail miserably and things only get more complicated from there on out. To make a long story short, the team ends up reluctantly partnering with Ivo Robotnik and soon discover that Ivo’s grandfather (Gerald) is responsible for breaking out Shadow. The breakout is part of an elaborate plan to hijack a secret weapon and get revenge against G.U.N. for past deeds involving the death of Gerald’s granddaughter Maria (whom Shadow was also close with). It soon becomes apparent though that Gerald has a much crazier plan in store. Can he be stopped?

The first “Sonic The Hedgehog” was a pleasant surprise while the sequel was a lackluster unfunny dud. With the Jeff Fowler directed third entry, the film series rebounds with what might be the best in the series due to one reason and one reason only- Jim Carrey. For those that long for the Jim Carrey of the 90’s, you get that peak form of Carrey here. He’s already been the standout of the entire film franchise as Ivo Robotnik, but this time around he’s playing dual roles as Ivo AND Gerald Robotnik. Sure, it’s cool to see fan favorite Shadow (voiced by Keanu Reeves) in a movie and there’s some memorable action pieces on Earth and in space, but Carrey makes this movie work. Not only is he all in on these 2 roles, but his comedic hijinks are downright funny. There’s even some surprising dramatic elements between the two characters that are affecting. Truth be told, the movie could have just been Carrey playing off Carrey for 90 minutes and it would have been pure gold.

Outside of Carrey, the found family unit of Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), and Knuckles (Idris Elba) is explored more here. Seeing the trio interact and trying to work together is one of the core elements of this sequel. Sure, it’s overshadowed (pun intended) by Shadow and especially Jim Carrey, but fans of this film series will undoubtedly treasure seeing more of the heroes in action. As for Shadow, he has a genuine character arc here. It’s all pretty predictable stuff with him learning a lesson about revenge, but perhaps the character will have a deeper story in the fourth film.
