Lioness Season 2 DVD Review

“Lioness” season 2 is an improvement over season 1.
In the 8 episode second season of “Lioness,” Joe and the QRF team (Kyle, Dean, Bobby, Tex, Tucker, Two Cups and Randy) are back in action and the stakes couldn’t be any higher. The series kicks off with a dangerous rescue mission of a Congresswoman from a Mexican cartel before delving into storylines involving the recruitment and training of a new Lioness Josie (who is an Army pilot and the niece of a Cartel leader), a China border plot, a warehouse drug bust mission that reveals something much more horrifying, a suspicious DEA Agent (Gutierrez), the previous Lioness (Cruz) being brought into the fold, Joe being wounded, a mission involving Josie’s father (Pablo) to get to her Cartel leader Uncle, and Chinese nuclear scientists.
Elsewhere in the season, other familiar faces have their own stories including Delta Force members Cody and Tracer and the situation room crew making the big decisions- Byron (Deputy Director CIA), Kaitlyn (CIA operative in charge of the Lioness program), Secretary of State Edwin, NSA Advisor Hollar, and Chief of Staff Mason.
Season 1 of the Taylor Sheridan created series was an intense but uneven series that was certainly elevated by the star power of Oscar winners Nicole Kidman, Morgan Freeman and Zoe Saldaña. Thankfully, all 3 stars return for the second season and the series is better for it. They could read the phone book and it would be must see TV. Luckily, they have more to work with than a phone book in season 2 which ramps up the action and intensity with numerous action set pieces including a chase/shootout and a climactic shootout in the season finale. Sheridan (who wrote every episode this season) does a commendable job balancing politics (with the situation room aspect), spy storylines, action, and character work. The plotline involving Josie (superbly played by Genesis Rodriguez) having to essentially betray her own family was particularly gripping.
A lot of the issues from season 1 are still present here especially with Joe struggling to maintain a work and home life balance. It feels like that whole storyline is just going in circles. The season finale (which delivers plenty of action) also feels strangely anti-climactic in how it deals with the Chinese scientists story arc. Some viewers may also feel a bit cheated that Cruz (Laysla De Oliveira) comes in late to the season given that she was the focal point of season 1.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: Widescreen. How does it look? It’s puzzling that there isn’t a Blu-ray release (yet) given that season 1 received a Blu-ray release. The DVD transfer is adequate but a tad fuzzy at times.
Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does it sound? The 5.1 track is satisfactory especially during the action scenes.
