Tulsa King Season 2 Blu-ray Review

“Tulsa King” Season 2 is on par with season 1.

In the 10 episode second season of “Tulsa King,” Dwight’s business empire continues to expand with casino, wind farm, and car dealership businesses. Unfortunately, Dwight ruffles more than a few feathers as he upsets numerous people including Cal Thresher (whose marijuana biz is being cut into by Dwight’s), Bill (a Kansas City mob leader who believes Dwight is stepping into his territory), Chickie (the NY mob leader who wants Dwight gone), and a Chinese triad led by Mind that is causing headaches for virtually everyone.

Elsewhere this season, viewers can expect to see storylines involving Dwight’s daughter Tina, Dwight’s trial, assassination attempts on Dwight, Dwight and Margaret’s relationship, Armand betraying Dwight out of desperation, tension between Chickie and Vince, Dwight’s sister Joanne, Tyson’s family, and Stacy (the police officer).

Taylor Sheridan seems to have a show on every week at this point, but “Tulsa King” might be his most entertaining (although it’s really writer/showrunner Terence Winter’s baby at this point). Is the show ridiculous and implausible? 100% and yet there’s something endearing about this rag-tag gang comprised of Dwight, Mitch, Tyson, Goodie, Armand, Grace, Bodhi and newbie Bigfoot. They’re all completely different people who you wouldn’t expect to work together, but they do. Dwight was once a fish out of water in season 1 who seems like a relic out of time, but he’s really adjusted to life in Tulsa, he’s adjusting to the times (mostly), and he’s making friends and business partners along the way.

The real reason “Tulsa King” is so watchable is that it has a perfect tonal balance. It can be a serious drama, it can be filled with escalating violence, and it can be lighthearted (especially the camaraderie between Dwight and his crew). Season 2 is especially more comedic which might seem a little strange at first, but once you get into the rhythm of the series you’ll find yourself glued to the screen all the way to the season 2 cliffhanger (which will make you want the forthcoming season 3 as soon as humanly possible).

The cast really elevates the series as a whole. Obviously, Sylvester Stallone is the main selling point here and it’s fun to watch how his character arc unfolds. Martin Starr, Garett Hedlund, Jay Will, and McKenna Quigley Harrington continue to be the MVPs of the supporting cast, but season 2 has a few new faces who are a welcome addition to the series (namely veterans Frank Grillo and Neal McDonough).
