How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies Blu-ray Review

“How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” is an affecting comedy-drama.

Written by Pat Boonnitipat and Thodsapon Thiptinnakorn,”How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” sounds like an edgy dark comedy from the title, but it’s anything but. The Thai comedy-drama is ultimately a bittersweet tale about family. The story follows a Thai speaking Chinese grandson named M (a college dropout and wannabe video game streamer) who decides to move in with and take care of his grandmother (Mengju) who was diagnosed with cancer. M was inspired to make this decision after learning that his cousin Mui made a fortune after looking after his grandpa who had just passed away. Initially M and Mengju don’t have much of a connection as they have polar opposite personalities (not to mention come from very different generations). Slowly but surely though the two begin to bond and M changes for the better. While all of this is going on, a greedy family battle ensues for Mengju’s money and property.

Directed by Pat Boonnitipat (who makes his directing debut here), “How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” is an emotional character piece about family, grandparents, generations, mortality, greed, and maturity. No matter what part of the world you are in, this is the type of down-to-earth story that will resonate with anyone. It makes you think about your own grandparents, the void they leave when they’re gone and the unfortunate and sometimes ugly dealings about inheritance. The film is also a rather tender and moving story about a young man (M) who experiences personal growth and learns responsibility in taking care of his dying grandmother. Does Boonnitipat go a little overboard with sentimentality in the overlong 126 minute runtime? Yes, but that never detracts from what is still a heartfelt tear jerking drama.

The film lives and dies on the casting of M and Mengju as they carry the emotional weight of the story. Thankfully, both actors (Putthipong Assaraatanakul and Usha Seamkhum) give grounded, realistic, and beautiful performances. You really buy into how they begin to bond with another as M takes care of Mengju. The rest of the cast (namely Sanya Kunakorn, Sarinrat Thomas, and Tontawan Tantivejakul) also give authentic performances.

Video/Audio:
