Crossing Delancey Criterion 4K UHD Review

“Crossing Delancey” is a sweet romantic comedy.

Written by Susan Sandler (and based on her play of the same name), 1988’s “Crossing Delancey” revolves around a 33 year old New York Jewish woman named Izzy. She works a fulfilling job at a bookstore, has a good group of friends, is close with her grandmother (Bubbe), and has a nice apartment, but she’s also looking for love. She gets a bit more than she bargains for when she falls for a noted author (Anton) and gets set up with a pickle store owner (Sam) by a marriage broker (Hannah) Izzy is attracted to Anton and his success, but seems to look down on the more blue collar Sam. She finds herself torn between the two and seems unsure of what she wants. Will she make the right decision?

Directed by Joan Micklin Silver (best known for “Chilly Scenes Of Winter”), “Crossing Delancey” is a charming 80’s rom-com that has for some reason gone under the radar after all these years. It never feels sappy, manipulative or remotely Hollywood. From start to finish, it feels like a very authentic story of a woman trying to find love in the Big Apple as she weighs her options (all to the sounds of The Roches).

On the subject of New York, the city is very much a character here. The eccentricities, neighborhoods, food, and various cultures are really captured within this story of Izzy. It’s much more than just a location in the film. It’s essential to the whole story being told here.

The performances make ‘Delancey’ work as well as it does. Army Irving gives a very down to earth and realistic performance as Izzy. You can’t imagine anyone else in the role. The underrated Peter Riegert is positively charming as Sam. Jeroen Krabbé is also note perfect as the jackass author Anton.
