Omni Loop Blu-ray Review

“Omni Loop” is an underwhelming time loop tale.

Written and directed by Bernardo Britto, “Omni Loop” is a sci-fi drama that revolves around a physicist (Zoya) who penned a textbook with her husband Donald. Zoya has a black hole growing in her chest. Instead of dying, she takes a time travel pill that she was given as a child which allows her to continually relive the last 5 days of her life with her husband, daughter and son-in-law. Wanting to research the pills more and potentially figure out a way to travel further in time, she enlists the help of a physics student (Paula), but will she find the answers she is looking for?

Time loops have been explored through many lenses, be it a rom-com (“Groundhog Day”) or a slasher horror (“Happy Death Day”). With “Omni Loop,” Bernardo Britto explores heavier themes about death, love, family, and acceptance. While the premise is ripe with potential, the tone is never quite consistent. The story is clearly a drama with some out there sci-fi concepts that attempt to feel grounded, but there’s a dose of comedy sprinkled throughout. These elements feel at odds with each other and don’t really gel. The sluggish pacing doesn’t do the story any favors either. It’s a shame because this could have been a more poignant, life-affirming story about embracing the life we have left. As is, it feels like the script needs more fine tuning to feel like less of a tonal mess.

On the plus side, the performances make “Omni Loop” at least watchable. Mary-Louise Parker (perhaps best known for “Weeds”) gets a chance to work with a deeper character and takes full advantage of the part. Ayo Edebiri (who is fast becoming a rising star in the indie film world) is charming as Paula. The two have a genuine chemistry on screen.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.39:1 1080p. How does it look? The picture quality is a little fuzzy but otherwise this is a quality transfer

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Viewers can expect a crisp audio experience that handles the dialogue and music well.

The only extras are titles for other Magnolia releases.
