Supervixens Blu-ray Review

“Supervixens” is one weird movie.

Written, directed, edited, produced, and shot by Russ Meyer (he really does it all), 1975’s “Supervixens” revolves around a gas station attendant (Clint) who is married to a cruel, jealous, sexual and controlling SuperAngel. After a feud, a cop (Harry Sledge) intervenes. SuperAngel winds up trying to score with Harry, but he turns out to be an impotent, violent psycho who brutally kills her. After hearing the news and knowing he will likely be blamed for the murder, Clint goes on the run. In his travels, he encounters other “Super” women who all try to seduce him. Eventually Clint meets a woman (SuperVixen) that he ends up falling for, but things take a dark turn when Harry finds Clint.

When it comes to tonal changes, “Supervixens” just might feature the most jarring switches in tone. The very beginning feels like a standard Russ Meyer sex comedy, but then it turns into a downright horror film when Harry murders SuperAngel in a truly nasty and shocking way. After that, Meyer goes full cartoony sexploitation/road movie with Clint encountering one topless woman after the next (all named Super) that land him in hot water. Once Clint meets SuperVixen (who looks like a clone of SuperAngel but is a much nicer person), the film veers into a sort of romantic comedy for a brief period. The film ends like a cross between a thriller with Harry preying upon Clint and SuperVixen and “Looney Tunes” with a clear Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote vibe complete with mountainous terrain and dynamite. If that all sounds like a head scratching mixture that’s because it is. That’s not even including weird out of the blue moments like Clint’s Nazi boss, the offroad chase, and the SuperAngel ghost either.

Despite the oddball combinations of genres, “Supervvixens” is certainly never boring. You have to admire Russ Meyer for going against the grain and telling a story unlike anyone else really. Granted, it might not always work (the SuperAngel murder is really vile and out of place here), but the sex comedy is titillating, amusingly cartoony, and features some notable performances including Shari Eubank (in dual roles) and character actor Charles Napier as the nutty cop Harry.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? Like “Vixen!,” this film has been scanned in 4K from the original negative. This is another stunning print that maintains the grain and features rich colors. Severin is knocking it out of the park with these releases. Hopefully we get “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill” one day.

Audio Track: Mono. How does it sound? There are audible crackles and the like, but this is still a quality audio track to be sure.

Extras:
* Archival commentary by Russ Meyer.
* Trailer and TV spot.
* An episode of “The Incredibly Strange Film Show” featuring guest Russ Meyer.
* “Russ Meyer Vs. The Porn-Busters”- A 24 minute 1990 interview between Mike Carroll and Russ Meyer about adult entertainment, the law, censorship, boycotts, artistic freedom and more.
* “The Return Of Harry Sledge”- A near 19 minute interview with actor Charles Napier
