Looney Tunes: Collector’s Choice Volume 4 Blu-ray Review

More toon fun.
Warner Archive’s series of Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies shorts making their Blu-ray debut continues on with “Looney Tunes: Collector’s Choice Volume 4.” The Blu-ray set contains 25 shorts from the 30’s to the 60’s. Included in this volume are: “Along Came Daffy,” “A Bone For A Bone,” “The Cagey Canary,” “D’ Fightin’ Ones,” “Dangerous Dan McFoo,” “Devil’s Feud Cake,” “Double Chaser,” “Double Or Mutton,” “Fox Pop,” “Henhouse Henery,” “Holiday For Drumsticks,” “Hopalong Casualty,” “Hyde And Go Tweet,” “The Impatient Patient,” “Leghorn Swoggled,” “Meatless Flyday,” “Mouse-Warming,” “The Mouse-Merized Cat,” “Muscle Tussle,” “Muzzle Tough,” “Peck Up Your Troubles,” “Quack Shot,” “Road To Andalay,” “The Sneezing Weasel,” and “Streamlined Greta Green.”
Stories of the above listed shorts involve: Daffy being seen as a meal by Yosemite Sam and his brother, goofy gophers vs. a dog, a pre-Sylvester and Tweety short about a cat and a bird, a “Defiant Ones” parody with Sylvester and a bulldog, a dog (Dan McFoo) fighting for his girlfriend, Yosemite Sam vs. Bugs Bunny, a mouse and a bulldog vs. a cat, Ralph Wolf wanting to nab sheep, a fox painting himself silver, Foghorn Leghorn getting in trouble with a chicken hawk and a dog, a Thanksgiving feast, Wile E. Coyote vs. Roadrunner, a giant Tweety, Daffy Duck encountering Dr. Jekyll, Henery Hawk trying to catch Foghorn Leghorn, spider vs. fly, Claude cat vs. 2 mice, a hypnotized Catsello, Daffy Duck fighting for his girlfriend, a Sylvester, Tweety and Granny tale, Sylvester chasing a woodpecker, Elmer Fudd hunting Daffy, Sylvester trying to catch Speedy Gonzales, a Weasel and chickens, and humanoid cars (not unlike “Cars”).
With “Looney Tunes” shorts, you definitely know what you’re getting. They’re comical little tales often about characters chasing or hunting one another (or trying to catch food). They may not have a wide variety of stories, but the characters are timeless. While all of the shorts have entertainment value, a few stood out to me. “D’ Fightin’ Ones” is a clever spoof of “The Defiant Ones” in which Sylvester and a bulldog are handcuffed together and unable to get their handcuffs off. “Hyde And Go Tweet” is perhaps the most notable toon here. It’s a “Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde” spoof of Tweety taking the potion and transforming into a giant bird. “Hopalong Casualty” is another classic adventure of Wile E. Coyote failing in his quest to catch Roadrunner. My personal favorite short is “The Mouse-Merized Cat.” It’s a deeply amusing Abbott and Costello spoof about 2 mice and a cat, hypnosis and a whole lot of impressions.
