Pulp Fiction: 30th Anniversary Limited Edition 4K UHD Review

“Pulp Fiction” is peak Tarantino.
Having been previously released on 4K before, there’s a brand new Amazon Exclusive edition celebrating the 30th anniversary of Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 classic. It’s hard to believe 30 years have passed since Tarantino changed not only indie film, but the movie industry as a whole. He was and still is a true auteur. He’s the rare filmmaker who is the star of his own films.
It’s entirely open to debate, but “Pulp Fiction” might very well be his finest work. The unique almost anthological non-chronological structure of interconnected stories in the criminal underworld about Honey Bunny, Pumpkin, Butch, Marsellus, Jules and Vincent makes for a fresh cinematic experience that has been often imitated but rarely equaled. The surf rock infused crime-comedy has plenty of intrigue, twists and violence, but it’s the dialogue that is perhaps most captivating. Whether the lines are about a Quarter Pounder With Cheese or religion, the conversational and wordy dialogue has a style all of its own. Sure, a lot of it wouldn’t fly today, but that can be said of many films.
Tarantino has a knack for assembling all-star casts and that is certainly true here as the film features the likes of Uma Thurman, Tim Roth, Bruce Willis, John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Amanda Plummer, Ving Rhames, Christopher Walken, and Harvey Keitel. Everyone (no matter how small the part is) shines here, but it’s Rhames, Travolta, and Jackson who arguably give the best performances of their careers here. They are served so well by the script, but they are just note perfect as Marsellus, Vincent and Jules. There’s a reason these characters are still quoted to this day.
