Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 DVD Review

“Star Trek: Prodigy” will please longtime Trek fans.

After switching from Paramount Plus to Netflix for the 2nd season, the CGI animated series “Star Trek: Prodigy” fully embraces being a “Star Trek: Voyager” sequel in many ways while also connecting to “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “Star Trek: Picard.” Story wise there’s a lot going on here. Dal, Rok, Jankom, Zero and Murf are now Starfleet cadets, but that doesn’t stop them from embarking on a major mission to save the missing Chakotay. Of course, the mission becomes quite complicated when they also have to stop a time paradox, save Gwyn from phasing in and out of time, and stop Ascencia (from Gwyn’s homeworld Solum) from some truly evil acts (no spoilers here). But wait, there’s more. Other key storylines involve a new Vulcan character named Maj’el (a member of Nova Squadron), holograms, Zero getting a new body, Wesley Crusher (as the Traveler), time creatures (The Loom) erasing people from time, the Protostar, giant tribbles, Admiral Janeway, and the Mirror Universe.

Some Star Trek fans may have dismissed “Star Trek: Prodigy” as a mere children’s show, but much like “Star Wars Rebels” and “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” this Kevin and Dan Haegman created series appeals to everyone. “Star Trek: Prodigy” may have young characters, but the series really features some deep cuts and follows up elements that fans have been wondering about for years. For instance, The Traveler is front and center here after making a quick cameo on “Star Trek: Picard” and Janeway, Chakotay and The Doctor are also major players. Anyone that is passionate about TNG or VOY (like myself) will be thrilled to see this show follow-up on these beloved characters in the Star Trek universe.

As for the sophomore season of ‘Prodigy,’ it’s nothing if not ambitious. Truth be told it’s a bit unwieldy at times as there’s a lot of moving parts, racing around, and more than a few moments that feel like you’re watching a Marvel Multiverse story. Still, even if it’s a bit overstuffed, there’s never a dull moment and, more importantly, not an ounce of filler. Moreover, the core group of characters (especially Gwyn and Zero) are serviced well by the stories being told this season. Hopefully, this won’t be the last time we see these characters.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: Widescreen. How does the series look? This is an impressive transfer for standard definition. The episodes look crisp and colorful. Note: This title is also available on Blu-ray.

Audio Track: Dolby Digital 5.1. How does the series sound? The sound effects, music, and voice acting sound clean with this 5.1 track.

Extras:
* “Producing Prodigy: The Legacy” covers the plot and the TNG and Voyager connections.
* “The Odyssey Of Prodigy”- A featurette on season 2’s story and characters, callbacks and little details.
