Bones And All 4K UHD Review

“Bones And All” is an overlooked Luca Guadagnino film.

Written for the screen by David Kajganich and based on the novel by Camille DeAngelis, 2022’s “Bones And All” can best be described as a coming-of-age movie, a road movie, a horror movie, and a cannibal romance. Yes, you read that right. The story revolves around the now 18 year old Maren who finds herself being abandoned by her father. You see, Maren and her father have always lived on the move due to Maren’s cannibalistic urges, but now she’s on her own. She hits the road and meets other cannibals including the creepy Sully and the dashing young Lee whom she falls in love with. Throughout her journey, she learns more about her cannibal nature, her family history (and Lee’s family), and Sully who turns out to be quite sinister.

Luca Guadagnino has become one of the hot directors over the past decade with hits like “Challengers” and “Call Me By Your Name.” For some reason, “Bones And All” never quite garnered the same level of attention as his other works even though it’s one of his more compelling stories. Sure, it might be a bit serious and straightforward given how warped and bizarre the material actually is, but that’s also what makes it so curious. Guadagnino has crafted a dark, moody, and atmospheric tale of acceptance, love, finding yourself (and your place), and outsiders. Watching this movie is like discovering a world within our own world and that’s the kind of story that is exciting and fresh. There’s a real sense of world building here.

The cast really sells the material. Timothée Chalamet’s star keeps rising and it’s not hard to see with a performance like this. He has such range and he makes it seem so effortless. Taylor Russell isn’t a household name yet, but she does a commendable job leading this film. Mark Rylance is the true MVP here though. In a career full of great performances, this is one of his finest. He’s downright freaky as the cannibal Sully. He’s quiet, weird, and menacing all at once.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1 2160p. How does it look? The Scream Factory disc contains a 4K presentation from the original elements. While this seems a random choice for a 4K upgrade, this disc is a definite improvement over the Blu-ray release. It maintains the print grain, features sharper colors and has a noticeably crisper image.

Audio Track: Dolby Atmos. How does it sound? Every little audio detail is captured perfectly with this Atmos track.

Extras (On The Blu-ray):
* Blu-ray copy
* “A Look Inside”- A brief featurette in which the cast and crew chat about the plot and characters.
* “Meet Lee” and Meet Maren”- 2 character profiles with interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and film clips. * Theatrical trailer
* “Outsiders In Love” covers the romance.
* “Luca Guadagnino: The Vision Of Bones And All” is all about Luca’s directorial style and handling of the story.
