Blink Twice Blu-ray Review

“Blink Twice” squanders a promising premise.

Written by Zoё Kravitz and E.T. Feigenbaum, 2024’s “Blink Twice” is a thriller that revolves around Frida- a nail artist who works as a waitress alongside her pal Jess at an event. While working, she encounters a rich tech bro (Slater King) who invites her and Jess to his private island for partying, drinking, drugs, swimming, gifts, fine dining and relaxation. Upon arrival, Frida and Jess meet a slew of guests including Vic, Lucas, Cody, Tom, Heather, Sarah, and Camilla. What starts out as a fun time soon turns into a nightmare when Frida begins to experience strange things (including memory loss) and discovering horrifying revelations about what is actually happening to her and the other female guests. What will she do next? That is the question.

In addition to co-writing “Blink Twice,” this 2024 feature film also marks the directorial debut of Zoё Kravitz. Right off the bat it’s clear that Kravitz is wanting to create a thriller in the vein of Jordan Peele as there are many “Get Out” influences to be had here. From a directorial perspective, Kravitz shows a lot of talent behind the camera as she has a real eye for visual storytelling. It will certainly be fascinating to see what kind of projects she does in the future. From a writing perspective, “Blink Twice” is a bit too ambitious for its own good. In addition to having many subjects floating around (trauma, class system, sexual predators, toxic masculinity, gaslighting, etc.), the slow-burn thriller is in need of more characterization. The characters often feel more like caricatures than anything else. Watching ‘Blink’ feels like a movie that wants to say more, but doesn’t have the content to convey everything properly. The blueprint is there but the final product is lacking.

Even though the characters are not as fully developed as one would like, Kravitz manages to get a dream cast for her debut film. Among the players here are Naomi Ackie, Alia Shawkat, Channing Tatum, Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Geena Davis, Kyle MacLachlan, and Haley Joel Osment. Everyone is on their A game, but the real stand outs here are Channing Tatum (who easily gives one of his best performances here as the dirtbag Slater), Haley Joel Osment (who is scene stealing here), and the ever versatile Adria Arjona who continues her rise to super stardom as the reality show star named Sarah.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.39:1 1080p. How does it look? The 4K transfer offers up crisp picture quality that maintains the print grain.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Expect a layered 5.1 track.

The lone extra is a Digital Copy.
