A Quiet Place: Day One 4K UHD Steelbook

The third time’s the charm.

Although he is credited for the story and acts as a producer, writer/director John Krasinski steps aside for this third installment as writer/director Michael Sarnoski (best known for the excellent “Pig”) takes over. This time around the prequel story focuses on new characters and a new location (NYC to be exact). The main character here is Sam- a young woman dying of cancer that lives at a hospice. Her nurse (Reuben) invites Sam (and her support pet cat Frodo) to a marionette show in the city and Sam accepts with the condition that she gets pizza. Alas, this quaint outing turns into an apocalyptic nightmare when the creatures crashland on Earth and begin to wipe out anything and everything making a noise. The survivors are guided to an evacuation point, but that too goes south. While fleeing for her life, Sam bumps into a traumatized law student (Eric). At first she wants nothing to do with him, but the two begin to bond and journey across the city to the evacuation zone.

After two solid entries, the Quiet Place franchise continues to be a consistent one with “A Quiet Place: Day One.” Although it doesn’t bring much new to the table in terms of what came before it story wise as it features more tense silent thrills, more creatures, and more action, the new locations and characters are a refreshing change of pace from Krasinski’s films. There’s a bigger scope to this entry with the NY setting (even though it wasn’t actually filmed in NY) and a lot more CGI and action set pieces everywhere from a subway to the streets (props to the production value team for their extensive work here). Granted, it all feels a bit too “Aliens” at times (especially with the presence of a cat), but it’s still a fun thrill ride nonetheless.

Perhaps the most curious aspect of ‘Day One’ is that viewers get a little bit more about what the creatures do. We even get to see a bigger creature which sheds light on how they operate.

Character wise, ‘Day One’ takes a unique route by having a dying character (Sam) as the lead. At the start of the film, she’s a bit over everything and is rather guarded. She’s more into having pizza before she passes than anything else. Through her time with Eric though she learns to live again and treasure what time she has left. Through these characters, Sarnoski is able to explore themes of mortality, sacrifice, trauma and letting go. Lupita Nyong’o (Sam) and Joseph Quinn of “Stranger Things” fame (Eric) really sell the characters and bring a real warmth to this apocalyptic sci-fi horror tale.
