Reacher Season 2 Blu-ray Review

Sophomore slump.
The 8 episode second season of “Reacher” adapts the 11th book in Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series titled “Bad Luck And Bad Trouble.” In this season, Reacher’s past comes into play. More specifically, his time with his Special Investigations Unit team. It seems members of his former team are being killed off. Who wants them dead and why initially remains a mystery? Reacher reunites with former team members Frances (Maria Sten), Karla (Serinda Swan), and David (Shaun Sipos) to get to the bottom of things while also seeking revenge against the killers. As they investigate, they discover possible links to a tech company, a killer named AM, a man named Shane (played by Robert Patrick) and a terrorist plot. NYPD Detective Russo (Domenick Lombardozzi) is also investigating matters and eventually aids Reacher’s team.
The first season of “Reacher” was a delightful surprise hit. Unlike the movies, the debut season nailed the source material, but also catapulted titular star Alan Ritchson into stardom (and deservedly so). Unfortunately, everything went wrong in season 2 which, for some reason, did not adapt the second book in the series. The first two episodes started out promising enough with the introduction of the central mystery, but it soon devolves into a generic B-movie action film with clunky writing, disappointing action scenes, and new characters that take valuable screen time away from Reacher. Only Frances Neagley (played by Maria Sten) holds her own here. In fact, she might even be getting her own spin-off series.
The central problem with season 2 is that it’s both a victim of its own success and that the central premise hurts it in the case of season 2. Jack Reacher is meant to be a drifting loner going from town to town and he really isn’t in season 2 as he’s with his old team for the majority of the season. The second season also misses the beloved characters from season 1 with Oscar (Malcolm Goodwin) and Roscoe (Willa Fitzgerald). The chemistry with Oscar, Roscoe and Reacher really carried season 1. Sure, Oscar has a small cameo, but the lack of Oscar and Roscoe is felt in season 2 especially since the new characters are so dull.
Despite the disappointment of season 2, there is hope that the series can bounce back with season 3. Each new season brings a new story, new surroundings, new characters and new opportunities.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 2.00:1 1080p. How does it look? The series looks pristine in 1080p. Note: This title is also available on 4K.
Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The 5.1 track packs a Reacher like punch (especially for a TV series).
