Harum Scarum Blu-ray Review

“Harum Scarum” is a goofy Elvis flick.
In writer Gerald Drayson Adam’s “Harum Scarum,” Elvis Presley stars as Johnny Tyrone (a movie star and singer). The story begins in the Middle East where Johnny is attending the premiere of his latest film “Sands Of The Desert.” The celebrity soon finds himself being kidnapped by the Assassins (led by Sinan) who want him to assassinate King Toranshah. After escaping their clutches but eventually being captured again, Johnny finds himself being forced to do the job. Worse still, Johnny is falling in love with the King’s daughter Shalimar. Why is the King being targeted for death? Can Johnny get himself out of this predicament and perhaps find some allies along the way? Is Johnny’s relationship with Shalimar doomed?
Often cited as one of the worst Elvis movies, director Gene Nelson’s “Harum Scarum” isn’t as bad as its reputation, but it’s not what one would call a good film either. The 1965 ‘Harum’ deserves credit for breaking the mold of the usual Elvis starring musical romantic comedies. Granted, this is still a musical romantic comedy, but it’s much more of an Arabian adventure film filled with horses, lavish costumes, thieves, brawls, acrobatic stunts, sword fights, whip action, dancing numbers, gorgeous women, Billy Barty, and yes, even Elvis karate chopping a leopard. There’s entertainment to be had here if you can get past the shortcomings.
Speaking of the shortcomings, there are certainly parts that are tough to watch. There’s undeniable racism and whitewashing here, the comedy fall spectacularly flat, the “Hey Little Girl” number is deeply disturbing, and even Elvis himself is sadly stiff and not so invested in the part. The soundtrack is also largely forgettable as it doesn’t feature any noted classics, but “Mirage” and “Harem Holiday” are at least catchy tunes.
Video/Audio:
Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? The hi-def restorations of Elvis films have been excellent and “Harum Scarum” continues this trend. This Metrocolor film looks positively stunning with its vibrant colors.
Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? From the soundtrack to the action, this 2.0 is electric.
Extras include Original theatrical trailer, song selection option, and 2 “Tom And Jerry” cartoons titled “The Cat’s Me-Ouch” and “Of Feline Bondage.”
