Gilbert Blu-ray Review

“Gilbert” showcases the many sides of the treasured late comedian.

Directed by Neil Berkeley, “Gilbert” is a 2017 documentary about the late comedian/actor Gilbert Gottfried who was best known for “Problem Child,” comedy roasts, and voicing Iago in the “Aladdin” series and the AFLAC duck. As you may well know, Gottfried’s most distinct characteristics were his loud voice and his penchant for filthy jokes (see “The Aristocrats”). The documentary isn’t necessarily about his career though, but rather the man behind the stage persona. His on and off stage lives couldn’t be more different. On stage he’s a larger than life character. At home, he’s a quiet, shy, guarded, and private person who lives with his adoring wife (Dara) and children. He also has a close relationship with his sisters who also reside in New York.

Neil Berkeley weaves in and out of the past and present in this documentary. For the most part we follow Gottfried during the production of this documentary, but through archival footage and photos we also learn about his past, family, and how he started off in comedy. In the present we see Gottfried’s family life, his life on the road, his podcasting recordings, him losing his AFLAC gig, and even learn about his tendencies to be a cheap hoarder. Interviews with fellow comedians and friends such as Jay Leno, Artie Lange, Jim Gaffigan and Bill Burr are also included throughout.

Looking at “Gilbert” now, it’s a rather bittersweet and heartbreaking viewing experience knowing he passed away a mere 5 years after the documentary was released. At the same time though, this is a movie that pulls back the curtain on the enigmatic comedian and celebrates his life. It’s very much a tribute to his life and career and it feels even more special now than when it was released. It’s the type of documentary that really digs into how many facets a person can have and how we display certain parts of ourselves in different situations whether it be at home, at work, with friends or solo. “Gilbert” is a reminder that there is more than meets the eye.
