Along Came The Devil Blu-ray Review

Been there, done that.
Based on true events, “Along Came The Devil” is a 2018 horror film that revolves around Ashley- a teen girl who lost her mother and lived with an abusive father alongside her sister Jordan (who is now in college). In the present, she is staying with her aunt Tanya and is about to attend a new school. Unfortunately, things are about to take a turn for the worse for Ashley as she begins to see ghostly apparitions of her mother and another shadowy demonic force that eventually possesses her. The entity also plagued Ashley’s mother before she was born. It’s up to Reverend Michael and Pastor John to try and exorcise the demon.
Written by Jason and Heather DeVan and Dylan Matlock and directed by Jason DeVan, “Along Came The Devil” is yet another possession film that shamelessly lifts so many ideas from past horror films including, obviously, “The Exorcist.” In fact, the movie even name drops “The Exorcist” at one point. There isn’t an ounce of originality in this slow low-budget horror flick as it attempts to scare viewers with tired jump scares involving whispers, shadows, possessions, and moving objects. Add in dreadful CGI (Stop. Using. CGI. In. Horror. Movies.) and it’s an entirely forgettable viewing experience.
The most noteworthy aspect of the entire film is the fact that it stars Sydney Sweeney before she became a movie star (which is probably why this movie is being re-released). She essentially plays two roles here as a shy teen and a demonically possessed teen. It’s a solid performance to be sure. Sweeney is joined by veteran actor Bruce Davison(“X-Men,” “Short Cuts,” and “Longtime Companion”), Matt Dallas (of “Kyle XY” fame), and Madison Lintz (“The Walking Dead”) who all turn in respectable performances that are far deserving of a better movie.
