The Last Stop In Yuma County Blu-ray Review

“The Last Stop In Yuma County”  is a respectable crime thriller.

After stopping off at a remote Arizona gas station, a traveling knife salesman learns that the gas pumps are empty and that there are no gas stations for the next 100 miles. A fuel truck is due shortly and the gas station owner/motel employee (Vernon) suggests he waits at the diner next door. While there the salesman meets a waitress (Charlotte) and discovers she is the wife of the local Sheriff (Charlie). The salesman isn’t the only diner customer, however, when two wanted bank robbers on the run (Beau and Travis) arrive on the scene in the same boat as the salesman. Shortly thereafter an elderly couple, two young lovers who are pondering crime, the Sheriff’s Deputy (Gavin) and a Native American rancher (Pete) also appear. To say anything more would be entering spoiler territory, but let’s just say the situation soon spirals out of control.

Written and directed by Francis Galluppi, “The Last Stop In Yuma County” plays like a cross between “Pulp Fiction” and “The Petrified Forest.” It’s a largely single location crime thriller that doesn’t bring much new to the table (and even references other films along the way), but its lack of originality isn’t a detractor. Familiar though it may be, ‘Yuma’ holds your interest from start to finish by offering up twists, turns, chaos, stylish visuals, and more than a few moments of violence. It’s a quick watch and you’ll want to see how this tension-filled situation plays out. It’s like the film equivalent of setting up dominoes and seeing how they fall.

Although ‘Yuma’ doesn’t sport any big names, the film is comprised of a lot of talented (and underrated) actors like Richard Brake (a regular in Rob Zombie’s filmography), Sam Huntington, Jocelin Donahue (who should be in more films), Faizon Love, Jim Cummings, and Barbara Crampton to name a few. The casting department definitely got it right with this ensemble piece.
