American Fiction Blu-ray Review

“American Fiction” was one of 2023’s best films.

Based on Percival Everett’s novel “Erasure,” “American Fiction” revolves around an African-American writer/professor named Thelonius “Monk” Ellison who is in a real funk. His books aren’t selling, he’s been placed on leave from his job, his sister tragically passed away unexpectedly, his mother has Alzheimer’s disease, and he’s dismayed that Black novelists like Sinatra Golden (whose work is riddled with harmful stereotypes) are finding success. Wanting to make a quick buck for various reasons, Monk pens a satirical novel called “My Pafology” (later named “F***”) which revels in stereotypes. The book commands a hefty payday and his publisher suggests he adopt a different persona for the work. Monk decides to create the persona Stagg R. Leigh- a fugitive criminal. Monk soon finds Stagg’s career take off to an overwhelming degree when “F***” is put up for a Literary Award and a film version is considered. Meanwhile, in Monk’s personal life, he develops a relationship with Coraline, tries to help his spiraling brother Cliff, struggles with the loss of his sister, and prepares for his housekeeper’s wedding.

Nominated for 5 Academy Awards (and the much deserved winner of Best Adapted Screenplay), “American Fiction” is a fiendishly clever, hard hitting, and smart satire about stereotypes, Black culture, art, writing and commercialization. In an age where IP and sequels run rampant, it’s refreshing to see a writer/director like Cord Jefferson tell a bold, relevant, and deep multi-faceted story. It also happens to be a rather hilarious movie (although there are dramatic moments to be sure) as Monk finds himself thrust into success by the very thing he rails against.

Truth be told, this is the type of movie we need to see more of. Something that goes against the grain and isn’t afraid to speak its mind. It’s the kind of movie that will have you thinking long after the credits roll. It’s that good.

As fantastic as Jefferson’s work is, the cast deserves a lot of credit. Veteran actor Jeffrey Wright has consistently been putting in top tier performances for decades now. The actor finally gets the recognition he deserves here along with an Oscar nom to boot. He gives a genuinely funny, thoughtful, and layered performance that is the heart of the movie. Sterling K. Brown (who also received a nomination) also gets a strong character to sink his teeth into as the closeted, drug-addicted surgeon brother of Monk, Cliff. Issa Rae also shines as the popular author Sinatra Golden.
