Where Are You Blu-ray Review

“Where Are You” is an arty mess.

2019’s “Where Are You” is an obscure indie thriller that revolves around a photographer named Nicolas. Despite living in a luxury home with his model/artist girlfriend Matilda, Nicolas finds his life spiraling out of control as he cheats on Matilda, struggles creatively, and seems to succumb to his own personal fears. Matters worsen when his surfer friend dies, Matilda vanishes and a woman ends up dead. Can Nicolas find Matilda? Can he get his life together?

Directed by Riccardo Spinotti and Valentina De Amicis and written by Spinotti De Amicis and Matt Handy, “Where Are You” attempts to be a provoking and mysterious meditation on life, art, and love, but winds up coming across as a choppy combination of a music video, a student film, a Terrence Malick and David Lynch knockoff, a high-end commercial and a homemade movie all rolled into one. It’s also as pretentious as can be with its artistic but wholly clumsy narrative that is in dire need of more plot.

About the only aspect of the movie that fares well here are the visuals. The handheld camera work can be rather nauseating, but the images on display are striking. It’s one of those films that does a great job in capturing the many facets of Los Angeles.

Don’t be fooled by the cover. This is not an Anthony Hopkins movie. In fact, he’s only in a few scenes that give off the impression that he just popped into a room for a few hours, spouted a few lines and promptly left. It’s clear the filmmakers were banking on his star power to sell the movie. It’s less clear what his role is even supposed to be here. Irakli Kvirikadze (Nicolas) and Camille Rowe (Matilda) are the main stars. Both of them turn in quality performances even though the film they are acting in leaves much to be desired.
