Ocean’s Trilogy 4K UHD Review

Ocean’s Trilogy is a must for heist movie fans.
Warner Bros. has given film fans a real treat with a new 4K release of director Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Trilogy.
2001’s “Ocean’s Eleven” remains one of the best remakes of all time and one of the best heist films of all time. The original may have had The Rat Pack, but this version is more fun, stylish and positively oozes cool. It doesn’t hurt that it boasts an all-star cast featuring the likes of George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt (who is comically always eating), Don Cheadle, Bernie Mac, Casey Affleck, Julia Roberts and Andy Garcia (among others). The story, for those that may have forgotten, finds Danny Ocean and his crew of 10 robbing Terry Benedict’s 3 casinos (the Bellagio, MGM Grand and the Mirage). The characterization, the cameos, the soundtrack, the snappy dialogue and seeing how the heist unfolds is a joy to behold.
“Ocean’s Twelve” fell flat for me back in 2004, but the sequel has aged a little better (although it is still easily the weakest entry of the trilogy). Danny and company find themselves having to travel to Amsterdam for a job after Terry Benedict locates each member and is forcing them to pay back what they stole in 2 weeks time. There’s the usual twists alongside subplots involving a master thief (Night Fox) and Europol Agent (Isabel) who has a connection with Rusty (Brad Pitt). The tone and pacing is odd and it isn’t nearly as breezy as 11 or 13, but the globe trotting adventure has its moments (such as Tess posing as Julia Roberts)
“Ocean’s Thirteen” (2007) is the best sequel and also ranks as one of Steven Soderbergh’s most underrated entries. This time around Danny and his crew seek revenge on Willy Bank who essentially steals Reuben’s casino dream right out from under him. Their plan? A two-part mission to sabotage his casino. There are several new faces (Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin) who are a welcome addition, but more than that, this third installment cleverly contains threads from the first 2 films as well. It’s also quite possibly the funniest of the trilogy. If this is really to be the last of the Ocean films with Clooney, Pitt, Damon, and so forth, it’s a perfect coda.
