Mean Girls (2024) 4K UHD Review

“Mean Girls” (2024) is not so fetch.
Based on the 2004 film and the stage musical, 2024’s “Mean Girls” is a new version for Gen-Z. The story revolves around Cady who is the new girl at North Shore High School after living in Kenya with her mother. Cady meets two pals Janice and Damian who essentially show her the ropes. Cady catches the eyes of Queen Bee Regina who is the leader of the popular girls clique the Plastics. Cady falls in with that group until a feud happens over Aaron. You see, Aaron is Regina’s ex-boyfriend, but Cady has a crush on him now. Regina manages to steal him away from her (again) which causes Cady to seek revenge against her. Unfortunately, Cady essentially loses herself in the process. Can Cady turn things around?
2004’s “Mean Girls” is regarded as a classic teen film, but it’s unlikely the 2024 version will follow suit. Despite being penned by Tina Fey (who also has a role as a teacher), this modern take feels decidedly watered down. It’s not edgy enough and tries way too hard to appeal to the youth. Not even the musical aspect works here with Jeff Richmond’s generic, corny and on the nose songs that are instantly forgettable. If you’re a die hard fan of the stage musical or the original you may get something out of this (namely the references and the cameos by Lindsay Lohan). Otherwise, stick with the original.
On the plus side, the cast features a few notable performances. Auli’i Cravalho of “Moana” fame completely steals the entire movie as the artsy Janice. It’s nice to see her getting more roles as she’s clearly multi-talented. It will be interesting to see her tackle the live-action “Moana” as well. Tim Meadows and Tina Fey are solid in their respective roles. Angourie Rice (who seems to be everywhere lately) gives a respectable performance as Cady. Reneé Rapp (who has become a Gen-Z icon) does well in the role of the real mean girl Regina.
