The Beekeeper 4K UHD Review

“The Beekeeper” is a ridiculous action movie.
Written by Kurt Wimmer, this action flick revolves around Adam Clay- a beekeeper who was once a member of a secret organization known as the Beekeepers (yes, this is the actual plot). Adam now resides in the barn of a kindly retired schoolteacher (Eloise). After Eloise is conned and loses all of her money, she commits suicide. Upon learning of this tragedy, Adam goes after those responsible. The man at the top- a tech bro named Derek who just happens to be the son of the President. As Adam wreaks havoc on anyone who tries to stop him, the daughter of Eloise (FBI agent Verona Parker) is part of an operation that is looking into the criminal operation that is responsible for her mother’s daughter. The FBI (and other agencies) are also after Adam.
Directed by David Ayer (best known for “Suicide Squad,” “Bright,” and “Fury”), “The Beekeeper” is an over-the-top action vehicle for Jason Statham. If you want to see a no-nonsense Statham as a one-man army beating down anyone who gets in his way, this is the movie for you. If you’re looking for something a bit more from your action movies, you won’t find that here. Outside of bee analogies and puns and some slight commentary on data mining and online scams, there’s not much going on here. It’s standard violent action fare with explosions, shootouts, hand-to-hand combat, oddball villains (including a punk assassin and a one-legged mercenary) and deaths galore.
The good news is the cast is pretty stacked with talent outside of a very serious Jason Statham (who does kick butt here). Expect to see acting veterans Jeremy Irons, Minnie Driver, Josh Hutcherson (pitch perfect as the jackass Derek), Phylicia Rashad and Jemma Redgrave (of “Doctor Who” fame) putting in fine work. The only cast member that doesn’t fit here is Emmy Raver-Lampman who is once again miscast (much like she was in “Blacklight”). She never seems convincing as an FBI agent and feels like she’s in an entirely different movie.
