Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey Blu-ray Review

Oh, bother.

In this horror movie spin on A.A. Milne and E.H. Shepard’s classic children’s book series, the story finds Winnie-The-Pooh and company becoming not so friendly creatures after Christopher Robin leaves them behind for college. Upon returning to his old stomping grounds in the Hundred Acre Woods with his soon to be wife Mary, Christopher discovers that things are very, very wrong with his former childhood hangout. Worse still, Pooh and Piglet have become murderous beasts that capture and torture Christopher. The story then transitions to 6 college friends (Maria, Lara, Tina, Zoe and Alice) who rent a cabin in the Hundred Acre Woods. As you might guess, they soon become preyed upon by Pooh and Piglet. Will anyone make it out alive? Can Christopher Robin be saved?

When “Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood And Honey” was first announced it instantly became a much buzzed about B-movie horror project. Alas, the end product leaves much to be desired.

Writer/director Rhys Frake-Waterfield may have taken the horror world by storm, but it’s clear that this rushed low-budget indie slasher tries to coast on its hook of being a horror version of Pooh alone. The problem is there’s just not much going on here. The patchwork story barely holds the movie together, there’s little characterization, but the film’s biggest sin is that it’s strangely boring and self-serious. Where’s the camp value? Sure, there’s some inherent goofiness, but the tone is so grim. It’s one thing if it was grim AND scary, but it’s neither. It needs to be more fun and atmospheric as those are the key ingredients of a successful slasher. Instead, it’s just a monotonous string of death scenes cobbled together.

The good news is the just released sequel is a vast improvement. While far from perfect, it’s more along the lines of what the first film should have been. At the end of the day though, Rhys Frake-Waterfield deserves credit here for creating his own niche horror universe. Even though the first film is severely lacking, it was a hit that caught people’s eye and in an era where films come and go so quickly that is an accomplishment to be sure.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.39:1 1080p. How does it look? This Scream Factory disc contains a high quality hi-def transfer.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA and 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The 5.1 track is a little soft for my liking but still adequate.

Extras:
* Original theatrical trailer
* “Something’s Wrong With Piglet- Making Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey”- A near 16 minute featurette with interviews and discussions about the production, alternate concepts, and it becoming a viral hit.
