Lynch/Oz Blu-ray Review

“Lynch/Oz” is among the best films of 2023.

Written and directed by Alexandre O. Philippe (best known for “78/52” and “Memory: The Origins Of Aliens”), “Lynch/Oz” is a documentary comprised of 6 visual essays narrated by directors John Waters, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, David Lowery, Rodney Ascher, Karyn Kusama, and film critic Amy Nicholson. Compiled of film clips, interviews, and footage specifically shot for the film (which evokes the spirit of David Lynch), the documentary explores the connections (conscious or otherwise) between the work of enigmatic cult filmmaker David Lynch (“Mulholland Drive,” “Blue Velvet,” to name a few) and the Hollywood classic “The Wizard Of Oz.” The filmmakers wax poetic on subjects such as realities, sound, artistry, parallels between Lynch’s work and Oz, Judy Garland, the 1950’s, B&W, and humanity. Other films such as “Back To The Future” and “Apocalypse Now” are also touched upon here in relation to Lynch’s body of work.

Visual essays can sometimes be stiff academic pieces, but that’s certainly not the case here. Speculative though it may be, “Lynch/Oz” is an often profound viewing experience. Through the six chapters, the documentary encapsulates the magic of cinema and how each individual can see something different in cinematic works. Whether it’s an observation (such as the use of wind in ‘Oz’ and Lynch’s work) or a discussion about the parallels between “Wild At Heart” and ‘Oz,” this documentary is a fascinating reminder of the open ended analysis of art.

At the same time, “Lynch/Oz” is very much about the movies that shape us and inspire us. There’s something almost moving about seeing how a single film can leave such a lasting imprint on a filmmaker and his work whether he realizes it or not. To be clear, Lynch definitely thinks about Oz frequently, but there may be instances in which he is unconsciously referencing the film in his own work. If that isn’t a prime example of the power of cinema, what is?
