Looney Tunes: Collector’s Choice Volume 3 Blu-ray Review

That’s not all, folks!

For those wondering if there would be another “Looney Tunes: Collector’s Choice” disc, you’re in luck as a third volume has surfaced. Comprised of 25 “Merrie Melodies”/”Looney Tunes” cartoon shorts, this release contains: “A Feud There Was,” “China Jones,” “Cinderella Meets Fella,” “Dumb Patrol,” “Egghead Rides Again,” “Elmer’s Pet Rabbit,” “Hobo Bobo,” “Honeymoon Hotel,” “Hop, Skip And A Chump,” “I Only Have Eyes For You,” “Mexican Joyride,” “The Mouse On 57th Street,” “Mr. And Mrs. Is The Name,” “Of Rice And Hen,” “Pre-Hysterical Hare,” “Punch Trunk,” “Quentin Quail,” “Riff Raffy Daffy,” “Saddle Silly,” “Sheep Ahoy,” “The Sheepish Wolf,” “There Auto Be A Law,” “Tugboat Granny,” “War And Pieces,” and “Wet Hare.”

The shorts (which range from the 1930’s to the 1960’s) involve a “Hatfield and McCoy” parody, P.I. China Jones (Daffy Duck) on a case, a Cinderella reworking, Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam fighting in planes, Egghead yearning to be a Cowboy, Elmer buying a rabbit (Bugs), elephant Little Bobo wanting to be in the circus, lovebugs at the Honeymoon Hotel in Bugtown, crows pursuing a grasshopper, an Iceman trying to woo a girl, Daffy Duck vacationing in Mexico, a mouse getting in trouble with the law, Buddy the merman, Foghorn Leghorn getting duped, Elmer (as a caveman) v a sabretooth rabbit (Bugs), a tiny elephant, Mr. Quail attempting to get a worm, Policeman Porky Pig vs. a homeless Daffy Duck, a Pony Express trip, a wolf preying on sheep, a mockumentary about automobiles, Sylvester trying to board a tugboat that Tweety and Granny are on, Wile E. Coyote vs. Roadrunner, and Bugs trying to stop a river dam.

For the “Looney Tunes” lovers out there, Warner Archive is treating you well with these now 3 Collector’s Choice releases featuring shorts available for the first time on Blu-ray. If you’re a more casual fan, this particular release isn’t the best collection to go with as there’s not a lot of top tier material here ala “Duck Amuck” or “What’s Opera, Doc?”. Now, that’s not to say there aren’t any comedic gems here because there are. The tiny elephant centric “Punch Trunk” is a cute little one-off, “Riff Raffy Daffy” is a good old fashioned Daffy (as a homeless duck trying to find a place to sleep) vs. Porky Pig (as a policeman) toon, “War And Pieces” is a laugh filled Wile E. Coyote vs. Roadrunner tale, and “Wet Hare” sees Bugs Bunny trying to stop Jacques from creating a river dam when all he wants to do is shower. Sure, the plots might be one note, but anytime you are witnessing masterful animation directors like Tex Avery and Chuck Jones at their craft you can never go wrong.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.37:1 1080p. How does it look? Like the previous two volumes, the shorts have been beautifully remastered. The colors are bright and crisp.

Audio Track: 2.0 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The audio ranges in quality from short to short and there are noticeable crackles, but the sound effects and music generally sounds cleaned up as much as possible.

No extras have been included.
