Magnum P.I. (2018): The Complete Series DVD Review

“Magnum P.I.: The Complete Series” is now available. 

All 5 seasons of 2018’s reboot of the beloved 1980 “Magnum P.I.” series are now collected together in a single DVD box set. The series, for those that don’t know, revolves around former NAVY SEAL Thomas Magnum who moonlights as a private security consultant for the unseen author Robin Masters and a private detective. He eventually partners with former MI6 agent Juliet Higgins whom he even develops a romance with. Of course, Magnum has plenty of allies including bar owner Rick, pilot T.C., Detective Katsumoto, a pickpocket named Jin, and Kumu. Like many CBS series, it’s a standard procedural series that involves criminal, missing persons, and murder cases, undercover missions, injuries, crossovers with “Hawaii Five-O,” and plenty of character arcs involving everything from the love lives of Magnum and Higgins to drama between Katsumoto and his son. 

For a number of years CBS went wild with reboots/remakes and “Magnum P.I.” was one of those shows. It may not hold a candle to the original series and indeed lacks the presence of Tom Selleck, but it’s a serviceable enough (albeit needless) reboot that may serve as comfort food to those who love procedurals, CBS programming, or the franchise as a whole. It’s all a very safe and formulaic “case of the week” type of show. You know what you’re getting week to week.

The saving grace of the series is the chemistry between Jay Hernandez and Perdita Weeks. They truly carry the show on their backs with their dedicated and charismatic performances.
