Faster Blu-ray Review

“Faster” is an underrated entry in The Rock’s filmography.

Written by Tony and Joe Gayton, 2010’s “Faster” is not an entry in the Fast and Furious series, but rather a throwback R-rated action revenge film. The story revolves around the fresh out of prison Driver who heads straight to a fast car and a gun to seek revenge against those responsible for his brother’s death. Driver was a bank robber who was shot in the head but miraculously survived and now has a metal plate in his head. He’s a man of few words, he’s dedicated to his mission, but he does have a heart. The other two central players here are a drug addicted chain smoking Cop on the verge of retirement who is trying to get back with his wife and connect with his son and a recently married hitman (simply known as Killer) who seems unable to quit his job.

The George Tillman, Jr. directed “Faster” is not a title that comes up frequently, but it’s a sneaky under-the-radar action film that is much better than its reputation would have you believe. Yes, it’s a simple revenge film with a twist that is undoubtedly inspired by the works of Quentin Tarantino and 70’s exploitation flicks, but the fast paced movie is all killer and no filler. There’s shootouts, car chases, intense violence, an electric cast (more on that soon), and it all runs a mere 98 minutes. What it lacks in originality it makes up for in sheer entertainment.

As mentioned, the cast is stacked with talent such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Maggie Grace, Carla Gugino, Tom Berenger, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Moon Bloodgood, Mike Epps, Jennifer Carpenter, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. The Rock delivers a quality performance here and is especially impressive during action scenes. Billy Bob Thornton crushes it as per usual as the shady Cop. Carla Gugino also shines as Detective Cicero.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 2.40:1 1080p. How does it look? The hi-def transfer is satisfactory

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? This is a LOUD track that really comes alive during action sequences and with any scene involving music.

This is a bare bones release.
