Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny Blu-ray Review

“Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny” is a fun adventure for fans of The D.

In 2006’s “Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny,” the movie tells the faux origin story of how Jack Black and Kyle Gass met and formed the rock outfit Tenacious D. The story begins with JB’s childhood where he grew up loving rock music in a religious household. He leaves his home and ventures to Hollywood where he meets a street musician named Kyle Gass (who pretends to be something he’s not). To make a long story short, the two eventually band together to form Tenacious D. Their first priority, however, is affording rent money. Wanting to get to the next level, the duo discover a secret guitar pick made from the Devil’s tooth. Seeing this as their ticket for stardom, they embark on a journey to a rock museum to grab it, but their trip becomes perilous.

Despite being a box office bomb at the time of its release, the Liam Lynch directed big screen Tenacious D film has become a cult favorite over the years. While it may not be on the level of their HBO series or their beloved albums, the rock musical still, well, rocks thanks to the charisma of its two leads (Jack Black and Kyle Gass) and the rockin’ soundtrack that features D classics like “Beelzeboss,” “Master Exploder,” and, of course, “Pick Of Destiny.” If you’re not in on the joke or unfamiliar with the comedy rock band, the film’s humor might go over your head. It’s very much made for the fans (like myself) and contains loads of references to the HBO series and the debut album (ala the fan Lee, Sasquatch, C*** Push-Ups, etc.). Does the script by Liam Lynch, Jack Black and Kyle Gass feel a bit loose and seem like it was more developed in the editing room? Perhaps, but that doesn’t lessen its entertainment value.

Even though this is very much Jack Black and Kyle Gass’s movie, there’s a ton of cameos here from the likes of Meatloaf, Dio, John C. Reilly (as Sasquatch!), Tim Robbins, Dave Grohl (as the Devil), Paul F. Tompkins, Amy Adams, Ben Stiller, Amy Poehler, and Fred Armisen. There’s even MORE cameos that didn’t make the cut in the deleted scenes. It’s a real star studded affair, but at the end of the day, the dynamic between Jables and KG (as they are often known) is what makes the comedy so rewarding. Even in scripted form you can see how close these two are as friends and musicians.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1 1080p. How does it look? The Shout Select Blu-ray is a definite upgrade from the DVD release. It maintains the grain while providing a sharper print.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? Proudly presented in THC (that’s the joke at the beginning), this 5.1 track delivers the goods. The soundtrack is especially potent.
