Magnum P.I.: The Final Season DVD Review

More of the same.
In the fifth and final season of 2018’s “Magnum P.I.” remake, Navy Seal turned P.I. Thomas Magnum and partner Juliet Higgins (a former MI6 agent) take on undercover assignments, missing persons cases, murder cases (along with various other cases). The two also begin to develop a relationship that they attempt to keep secret. Outside of that, there are plots involving a Captain Buck Greene mystery, Detective Gordon Katsumoto’s job and son, Jin Jeong, a severe injury to a major character and plenty of subplots involving allies Rick, T.C and Kumu.
After being canceled on CBS, “Magnum P.I.” found new life on NBC for the 20 episode fifth season, but alas it has been canceled again. As such, this is the final season of the action-drama procedural. If you’ve been following the show, you know what to expect here. The fifth season offers up more of the same in terms of its case of the week approach mixed with ongoing character arcs. It’s all very safe and old school TV storytelling and that’s perfectly fine. Not every show has to be high art. Everyone has their comfort shows and this is certainly one for a specific audience.
It may lack the star power and screen presence of Tom Selleck, but Jay Hernandez (Thomas Magnum) and Perdita Weeks (Juliet Higgins) prove to be capable leads who have good chemistry together. To be honest, they are the best part of the entire series.
