Billions: The Final Season DVD Review

For the fans.

In the 12 episode seventh and final season of Showtime’s “Billions,” billionaire Bobby Axelrod makes his anticipated return to the series, but that’s not the only major plot this season. Michael Prince plots to run for President while employees of his company attempt to stop his Presidential run. Chuck is also reinstated as the U.S. Attorney Of The Southern District Of New York and he’s looking to prosecute Michael. Of course, characters like Wendy, Wags, Taylor, Scooter, Kate and Dollar Bill all have their own storylines throughout.

For 7 seasons, the Brian Koppelman, David Levien and Andrew Ross Sorkin created drama series amassed a loyal fanbase. For those that have stuck around this long, this season will obviously be more meaningful to you. For the casual fans out there, you might be curious to see how it all wraps up, but don’t go expecting this season to be one of the best. If anything, the season is a reminder that the show is out of gas and ended at the right time. Now, the show was never high art to begin with, but the talented cast and twists and turns lured people in. In season 7, there’s plenty of business, politics, backstabbing, blackmails, snappy dialogue, surprise partnerships and twists and turns, but it all feels tired at this point. The soap opera drama has become so outlandish that it’s borderline cartoonish. You do get to see Axe return and every major character gets their respective screentime. Maybe that’s enough for the fans but for those expecting stronger storytelling, you might be disappointed by the underwhelming plotting.

As mentioned above, the show has a wealth of talent (and some fun cameos to boot). Paul Giamatti is one of the best actors in the business. You could say this show even wastes his talents because he’s that good. Damian Lewis has always been an underrated actor and he really embraces his role as Axe. Corey Stoll (another underrated actor) shines as Michael. Maggie Siff always gave a strong performance as Wendy.
