A Creature Was Stirring Blu-ray Review

“A Creature Was Stirring” isn’t very stirring.

Written by Shannon Wells, “A Creature Was Stirring” is an indie horror film set during a blizzard in the Christmas season. The story takes place inside the house of a nurse named Faith. Faith is taking care of her daughter (Charm) who apparently has a highly unusual condition. She shields Charm from the rest of the world for reasons that later become clear. When 2 robbers (Liz and Corey) break into the home, they end up staying out of necessity due to the hazardous blizzard. The two thieves quickly discover that something is very often in this household. Is Charm some sort of porcupine esque creature or are things not quite as they seem?

Director Damien LeVeck attempts to create a claustrophobic psychological horror film about addiction, trauma, faith, and personal demons, but ‘Creature’ never quite gels. For the most part, the script by Wells bides its time as it lumbers towards the twist ending. In between that time period there’s a lot of scenes of characters running around a house. There’s only so much you can do with 4 characters in a single location. It really limits the action and it shows here. As a result, it feels like the premise is worn thin early on. Sure, there’s some intense elements with admirable practical effects and costumes, but that only takes the movie so far. The movie also suffers from some truly dreadful edits and cuts that make you feel like a good chunk of material is missing (or was never shot).

For those wondering how the Christmas element plays out here, it’s basically just a backdrop. This is a dark and not so festive movie. In fact, the movie is not what you expect it to be in general. Make of that as you will.

On the plus side, the cast is the best part of the entire project. Chrissy Metz of “This Is Us” fame shows her acting range here. Annalise Basso steals the movie as Charm and has the film’s most memorable character moments. Genre favorite Scout Taylor-Compton and Connor Paolo both shine as the home invaders.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 16:9 1080p. How does it look? It may not be much of a Christmas movie, but the festive lighting really shines in hi-def.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The 5.1 track is effective.

Extras include Well Go USA trailers and “A Creature Was Stirring” trailer.
