Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Part 1 4K UHD Steelbook Review

“Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Part 1” gets a big shrug.

Based on the iconic comic book run by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, director Jeff Wamester’s “Justice League: Crisis On Infinite Earths Part 1” is the first installment in a trilogy of animated DC films. The story primarily revolves around Barry Allen’s Flash (perfectly voiced by Matt Bomer) who is time tripping to pivotal moments in his life that include the first time he met Iris West, battles with Amazo, the formation of the Justice League, and his wedding. The main story kicks into gear when an anti-matter wave begins to destroy universes. Heroes of various skill sets (including Flash) from multiple universes are gathered together by a Monitor to find a solution to the problem (even though it may have unexpected consequences).

Years ago the reveal of “Crisis On Infinite Earths” animated films would have been big news, but since the Arrowverse has recently done their own version, it feels like it’s come a bit too late. Likewise, the general superhero fatigue at this time makes this event trilogy feel less special than it should have been. It also doesn’t help that it’s hard to judge this first part as it’s very much the opening act of a three part story.

For those that aren’t aware, ‘Crisis’ continues the Tomorroverwse series of DC animated films that began with “Superman: Man Of Tomorrow” and will conclude with part 3 of ‘Crisis.’ Writer Jim Krieg tries to connect the film series in a rather underwhelming fashion with this part 1 while also telling a story that is constantly jumping around in time. It all feels like old hat at this point especially since we’ve seen the Multiverse in so many films and shows as of late (including “The Flash” movie). ‘Crisis’ also continues the frustrating trend of adaptations that really need to follow the source material more. Yes, this adaptation would always be different with its Tomorrowverse ties, but it’s safe to say fans would be more inclined to see a proper animated film version of that classic comic book storyline . Perhaps the second and third parts will lift up this first part, but for right now, part one merely feels like an uninspired set-up that demonstrates that the DC animated films are running out of creativity.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.78:1 2160p. How does it look? Much like the other Tomorrowverse films, the 4K release is the best transfer out there. It may not dazzle like a CG animated film, but it’s still crisp.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? As per usual, the 5.1 track is nothing short of active (in the best way possible).

Extras:
* Digital copy
* “Crisis On Infinite Earths Part 1: Crisis Prime(r)”- A discussion about the connected animated movies leading up to this two-part event movie.
* “Crisis On Infinite Earths Part One: The Selfless Speedster” is all about Barry Allen’s Flash.
