Cult Of Chucky 4K UHD Review

“Cult Of Chucky” is the weakest entry in the series.

“Cult Of Chucky” is the direct sequel to “Curse Of Chucky” and continues the story of Nica. At the start of the story, Nica has been transferred to a new mental hospital. Alas, poor Nica can’t seem to escape Chucky as multiple Chucky dolls wind up at the hospital. As one might imagine, the hospital becomes a very unsafe and dangerous place. Meanwhile, Andy gets wind of Nica’s story and ventures to the hospital himself.

Written and directed by Don Mancini, “Cult Of Chucky” remains my least favorite installment in the film series. Thankfully, the franchise managed to make a big rebound with the “Chucky” series that is still going on. The television series continues threads from this film as well. Anyway, the main issue with ‘Cult’ is that it’s inherently mean spirited. It doesn’t sit right to see Chucky terrorizing people at a mental hospital (although maybe that was the point). It’s also by far the bleakest and darkest film of the franchise with the vicious death sequences, the damaged Andy, and a down note ending (to put it gently).

‘Cult does have its moments. The introduction of multiple Chucky dolls was a rewarding plot point that is also integral to the TV series. Getting to see the return of Andy to the series also proved to be beneficial (although it would have been nice to see him do a bit more here). Fiona Dourif is also once again fantastic as Nica. Her performance at the end (no spoilers) is particularly fun to see.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1 2160p. How does it look? The 4K master of the unrated cut (the rated cut is not in 4K) is a step up from the Blu-ray. You can’t go wrong with the Scream Factory Chucky 4K releases.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? This 5.1 track is crisp and clear.

Extras:
* Commentary by Don Mancini and animatronic designer Tony Gardner (on the 4K and Blu-ray)
* On The Blu-ray- 2 “Cult Of Chucky” trailers, TV spot, 3 deleted scenes with optional commentary by Don Mancini, individual interviews with Tony Gardner and Alex Vincent, Alex Vincent recording studio promo, “The Dollhouse” (a featurette on the production and creative team), “Inside The Insanity Of Cult Of Chucky” (a featurette on the film and franchise) and “Good Guy Gone Bad: The Incarnations Of Chucky (a bonus feature that covers the various look of Chucky in the film series).
