The Town That Loved Bigfoot Blu-ray Review

“The Town That Loved Bigfoot” will appeal to Bigfoot enthusiasts.

Directed by J. Brandon Maughon, “The Town That Loved Bigfoot” is a 2020 documentary film about the Bigfoot Capital Of Alabama- Evergreen. Even though the Pacific Northwest tends to be synonymous with Bigfoot, there’s clearly no shortage of Bigfoot stories in this small, tight-knit Southern town. Through interviewees such as dentist Dr. Floyd Cartwright, radio host Luther Upton, The Evergreen Courant newspaper editor Lee Peacock, Mayor Pete Wolff, nurse/bigfoot hunter Ashley McPhaul, and Gulf Coast Bigfoot Research Organization founder Bobby Hamilton (who is a sort of Ghostbuster in the Bigfoot world), we learn about the history of the town, the numerous bigfoot sightings, the tourism, the bigfoot statue (which the town is very proud of), and even the Bigfoot Calling Championship that takes place during the Collard Green Festival.

The mythical creature Bigfoot has long been a source of fascination across America and “The Town That Loved Bigfoot” certainly explores this phenomenon. While this indie documentary is cheaply made and resembles a low-quality YouTube video more than anything else (see the dopey narration and cheeseball transitional clips that correlate with discussions), that doesn’t mean it’s not entertaining. In fact, the documentary is a quick 72 minute watch. The town locals prove to be engaging interviews as they recount stories they’ve heard, describe their own personal experiences, discuss primates and animal temperaments, relay hunting tales, and paint a picture of the town they inhabit. Could the doc have used more interviews? Perhaps, but the ones we do get provide more than enough content for the narrative.

For those hoping this documentary sheds new light on Bigfoot, it doesn’t. Like anything out there, it’s entirely theoretical in determining whether or not Bigfoot is real. What you do get is engrossing stories and really that’s all you can ask for when it comes to Bigfoot. Some of these stories may be hoaxes, some of these stories may be filled with paranoia, and some of these stories may just be about other weird animal encounters. Whatever the case may be, these mysterious and often unexplainable stories are a source of fascination that only adds fuel to the mythos of Bigfoot’s existence.
