Curse Of Chucky 4K UHD Review

“Curse Of Chucky” goes back to its horror roots.
In the sixth installment of the Chucky franchise, the titular killer doll mysteriously winds up being delivered to the isolated home of Sarah and her paraplegic daughter Nica. Right away, bad things begin to happen when Sarah dies. It was ruled a suicide, but we all know better. Shortly thereafter, Nica’s sister (Barb), Barb’s husband Ian, their young daughter Alice, nanny (Jill) and a Priest (Father Frank) arrive at the home. Barb is trying to pressure Nica into selling the house, but she doesn’t want to. As the house guests begin to settle in, Chucky begins his reign of terror. The question is- why did Chucky come to this house?
After the highly weird and comedic “Seed Of Chucky,” it makes sense that writer/director Don Mancini decided to take the franchise back to its horror roots with 2013’s “Curse Of Chucky.” Unfortunately, the budgetary constraints hamper this film a tad bit. Given that the film is primarily filmed in just one location, there’s a whole lot of house wandering filler. Mancini also really takes his time making the audience wait for Chucky to finally speak and kill (on screen that is). Chucky himself even looks a bit different and odd in animatronic form (although creepier at times).
Thankfully, the movie does pay off in the end. Without spoiling too much, Charles Lee Ray’s past is explored here AND there’s a surprise appearance in the end that perfectly sets up the next sequel (“Cult Of Chucky”). On top of that, it’s also rather refreshing to see a down note ending in which Chucky essentially wins.
Cast wise, Brad isn’t the only Dourif in this film as his daughter Fiona stars as Nica. Fiona has become a key character in the franchise now with her role continuing on in the “Chucky” TV series. She’s a perfect addition to the cast and it’s certainly interesting to see her act alongside her father as Chucky (who crushes it as per usual). Danielle Bisutti (Barb) also shines here as Nica’s sister/.
