Seed Of Chucky 4K UHD Review

“Seed Of Chucky” is a polarizing sequel.

Written and directed by Don Mancini, “Seed Of Chucky” is the fifth entry in the horror franchise. At the end of “Bride Of Chucky,” a child was born and at the start of ‘Seed’ we see who that child is- Glen. Glen starts off the film working with an abusive ventriloquist in England. When he sees his parents Chucky and Tiffany on TV, he decides to venture to Hollywood to meet them. They aren’t actually his parents though as they are merely dolls being used in the Hollywood movie “Chucky Goes Psycho” which stars Jennifer Tilly (who plays an exaggerated version of herself). Glen does manage to bring them back to life with the amulet though. The family reunion doesn’t exactly go well though as it’s nothing short of dysfunctional. Glen feels pressured to continue his family’s murderous legacy all while struggling with gender identity. Tiffany wants her and Chucky to get help for murder addiction which causes their relationship to implode. On top of that, Tiffany and Chucky are targeting Jennifer Tilly and Redman to transfer their souls into their bodies. Tiffany also wants to impregnate Tilly so that Glen can transfer their soul into a human child.

Upon seeing 2004’s “Seed Of Chucky” in theaters, it felt like a let down after “Bride Of Chucky.” Revisiting it again 19 years later, the movie still feels messy, but it was also ahead of its time in terms of its exploration of Glen’s gender identity. On top of that the movie’s story threads certainly paid off in the “Chucky” TV series as well.

As a sequel though, ‘Seed’ feels a bit too unwieldy. You have the demented and dysfunctional family/parenthood storyline, random bits of raunchy and pop culture humor (the Britney Spears joke is particularly odd), Glen’s story, Jennifer Tilly’s career story, the murder addiction plotline, a tone that is unlike any of the other films in the series, and meta elements with the Hollywood movie angle and Jennifer Tilly. If this was a season of “Chucky” it could have worked. As a movie, it feels overstuffed even though it deserves props for doing something different.

Once again, Brad Dourif and Jennifer Tilly are superb in their roles (especially with Tilly playing herself and playing Tiffany). The inclusion of John Waters playing a paparazzi was pure joy. Billy Boyd does a notable job voicing Glen/Glenda.

Note: The 4K disc only contains the theatrical cut whereas the Blu-ray contains the theatrical and unrated cuts. Please stop this trend.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1 2160p. How does it look? The new transfer is a 4K master from the original camera negative and the result is easily the best transfer to date. The colors are particularly vibrant (especially the Christmas sequence).

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? This is a crisp 5.1 track that does the job.

Extras (On The Blu-ray):* Blu-ray copy.
* Theatrical trailer, teaser trailers and TV spots.
* Storyboard to final feature comparison.
* A deleted scene with optional commentary by Don Mancini and Debbie Carrington.
* 2 separate interviews with John Waters and Tony Gardner (special makeup designer). The Waters interview is highly entertaining as usual (I only wish it was longer).
* “Heeeeeere’s Chucky”- A faux interview with Chucky and Jim Moret.
* Jennifer Tilly on “The Tonight Show” filmed segment.
* “FuZion: Up Close With The Seed Of Chucky Stars”- A promo segment from the FuZion program.
* “Conceiving The Seed Of Chucky”- An archival featurette with interviews, story discussions, and more.
* “Family Hell-Day Slide Show”- A Chucky family slide show.
