Bride Of Chucky 4K UHD Review

“Bride Of Chucky” is arguably the best in the series.

Written by Don Mancini, “Bride Of Chucky” is the fourth installment in the Chucky franchise. This time around, however, the tone is entirely different from the previous entries in that it’s a straight up horror comedy. The story revolves around Tiffany- a former lover of Charles Lee Ray AKA Chucky. Tiffany obtains the Chucky doll, sews him up and resurrects him. Unfortunately, Chucky’s resurrection isn’t what she imagined it would be and the two begin feuding. Chucky kills Tiffany and puts her soul inside the body of a doll. Now, both Chucky and Tiffany are seeking to transfer souls into human bodies, but they need the Heart of Damballa amulet which is in the grave of Charles Lee Ray. Enter the human characters Jade and Jesse. These two lovebirds are being kept apart by Jade’s Police Chief Uncle. Jesse finds an opportunity to start a life with Jade when Tiffany offers Jesse money to transport the 2 dolls to the cemetery where the amulet lies. What should have been a simple road trip turns into a nightmare though when Chucky and Tiffany start murdering people (initially unbeknownst to Jade and Jesse). With bodies piling up around them, Jade and Jesse begin to suspect one another of being a killer which puts a damper on their romance until they discover the horrifying truth.

Primarily known for martial arts films, director Ronny Yu tried his hand in the horror realm and turned out to be a natural. In fact, he later went on to direct the smash-hit “Freddy Vs. Jason.” The director brings a real style to this entry while also perfectly juggling horror, bloody deaths, action, and campy humor.

Don Mancini has spent his career penning the Chucky franchise to great results, but ‘Bride’ might be his best work. Not only is it a clever take on “Bride Of Frankenstein,” but it’s also a rather demented take-off on romantic comedies as well. With ‘Bride’ he showed he could take the franchise to new and fun places. Of course, now we know that Mancini is taking Chucky to even more wild and creatives places with the “Chucky” TV series.

Brad Dourif has always been note perfect as Chucky, but let’s be real, Dourif’s performance is even better when he plays off of Jennifer Tilly who is a welcome addition to the franchise. Tilly’s Tiffany has become a beloved character and it’s not hard to see why. Both in human and doll form, she just grabs your attention. Rounding out the cast here are notable performances from John Ritter, Katherine Heigl (in an early role), and Alexis Arquette in a small but memorable role as Tiffany’s wannabe lover.

Video/Audio:

Presentation: 1.85:1 2160p. How does it look? The new 4K master is most impressive. I’ve seen this film numerous times and the clarity of the image here is a big step up from past releases.

Audio Track: 5.1 DTS-HD MA. How does it sound? The 5.1 track is effective and really shines in the music department.

Extras:
* Commentary by director Ronny Yu (on the 4K and Blu-ray)
* Commentary by Jennifer Tilly, Brad Dourif and Don Mancini (on the 4K and Blu-ray).
* Blu-ray copy.
* On The Blu-ray- Theatrical trailer, 2 TV spots, nearly 3 minutes of additional deleted TV scenes, a making of featurette and a vintage “Bride Of Chucky Spotlight On Location” with interviews, set footage and story/character discussions.
