The Nun 2 4K UHD Review

The Nun franchise still has no idea what to do with Valak.

In this sequel to 2018’s “The Nun,” Sister Irene’s past comes back to haunt her again when a Cardinal asks her to leave her convent in Italy to investigate murders in France that may be linked with The Demon Nun/Valak. Irene travels with another nun (Sister Debra) to France where they learn about Valak’s possible origin and discover that Irene’s acquaintance (Maurice) is being possessed by Valak at a boarding school populated by children who are now in grave danger.

When The Nun appeared in “The Conjuring 2” audiences immediately wanted to see more of her. Alas, horror fans were decidedly unimpressed when the demon got her own movie. Now, with 2023’s “The Nun 2,” it’s safe to say The Conjuring Universe creatives have no idea what to do with Valak.

After helming the underrated “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” director Michael Chaves steps into the director’s chair for the sequel. While there are a few inspired visual horror moments (the nifty news stand scene is the best part of the entire movie), the script by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing and Akela Cooper feels like a generic slapped together horror sequel that brings nothing new to the table. It’s baffling as to why these Nun films hide Valak so much. If you’ve got a freaky movie monster, you should take full advantage of that. Instead, Valak doesn’t appear nearly enough as the movie becomes bogged down by more tired possession material. Sure, the Nun movies may be financial successes, but it’s time for Valak to get a fresh story that utilizes her inherent creepiness.

Cast wise, the trio of leads (Taissa Farmiga, Storm Reid and Jonas Bloquet) all do a fine job considering the lackluster material they are given. Young actress Katelyn Rose Downey gives perhaps the film’s best performance as the shy young girl Sophie at the boarding school.
