South Park: The Streaming Wars Blu-ray Review

“South Park: The Streaming Wars” is another hilarious event special.

Written and directed by Trey Parker, “South Park: The Streaming Wars” is a two-part movie special in which Denver is experiencing a drought due to ManBearPig causing environmental damage. This sets off a chain of events involving Tolkien’s father Steve and Randy selling off water ”subscriptions” to people and a nefarious water park owner (Pi Pi) planning to replace Denver’s water with urine. Other subplots involve Randy becoming a Karen, breast implants, a weed farm rivalry, ManBearPig’s family, a desalination plant, and Steve going missing.

You’d think that in year 26 of the crudely animated adult comedy series the show would have lost a step ala “The Simpsons.” Alas, “South Park” seems to have found a new creative resurgence with these epic event specials that include “South Park: The Streaming Wars.”

Although perhaps a bit overstuffed and unwieldy, “South Park: The Streaming Wars” is a rather deep story once you look past the comedic shenanigans (Cartman getting breast implants) and raunchy material (pee drinking).  Through an almost “Chinatown” esque mystery, Trey Parker tackles subject matters about water supply issues, media streaming services, corporations, climate change and an absolutely scathing takedown of celebrity cryptocurrency commercials (which might be the funniest bits in the entire movie). There’s a lot going on here and it’s gutsy to see Parker dig into these topics…on a streaming service platform no less.
