My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 Blu-ray Review

The sequel no one asked for.

In the third entry in the romantic comedy franchise, Toula and members of her family venture to Greece for an alleged reunion in the village her late father Gus grew up in.. Toula also has a mission to deliver Gus’s journal to his 3 childhood friends if they are able to be located. Upon arrival, things don’t exactly go as planned as the village is falling apart, the reunion may not happen, and her father’s friends have all moved away. While Tuala asks for help in locating Gus’s friends, the trip turns out to be nothing short of eventful. Tuala learns she has a brother, Tuala’s daughter Paris develops a romance, a wedding is about to happen, and other secrets are revealed.

The first “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” was an enjoyable surprise hit back in 2002, but with “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” it’s clear there is no life left in this franchise.

For the third installment, Nia Vardalos steps into the director’s chair while also starring in the lead role and writing the screenplay. While the story is a heartfelt tribute to Greek families and immigrants, it’s presented in the most uninspired, safe, and lazy fashion. Tired cornball jokes have been recycled with new ones falling completely flat, there’s far too many montages, and the film is generally directed like a music video at times. Vardalos also doesn’t give her giant ensemble cast of characters enough to do outside of cook, talk, and bust out one-liners. The story is missing something more vital to justify its existence.

Going back to the characters, the cast is the only thing keeping the movie afloat. Nia Vardalos has improved as an actor, Elena Kampouris is charming as Paris, Louis Mandylor perfectly embodies Nick, Andrea Martin scene steals as Theia, Melina Kotselou brings energy as Mayor Victory, and Anthi Andreopoulou shines as Alexandra. John Corbett and Joey Fatone may be bigger names, but they have very little to do here.
