The Boys Season 3 Blu-ray Review

“The Boys” are back in town for a third season.

Based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, “The Boys” is an Amazon Prime superhero series. The 8 episode third season takes place a year after the season 2 finale. The Boys (vigilantes who work to take down corrupt superheroes led by Billy Butcher) are now working as contractors for Victoria Neuman’s Bureau of Superhuman Affairs to seek out rogue superheroes. The Seven team of superheroes continue to work for the Vought Corporation, but there is unrest within the group as Starlight is looking to lead a rebellion against the unstable and deadly Homelander. Elsewhere this season there are plots involving Starlight and Hughie’s relationship, the presumed dead Soldier Boy (who once led the superhero team Payback), a dangerous V24 superpower elixir, a superhero orgy, Kimiko losing her powers, to name a few.

Since its debut in 2019, “The Boys” has amassed a devoted fanbase as the sort of anti-Marvel with its dark satire, bloody violence, and behind-the-scenes exploration of superheroes who are seriously messed up. Using the blueprint of the renowned Garth Ennis obviously helps the storytelling too.

With all of that said, “The Boys” never quite resonated with me. The cynical nature of the show doesn’t sit well with me and the mirroring of current political events feels way too on the nose. Tapping into world events is nothing new for film and TV, but intelligent nuance is always the key to its success. It shouldn’t just serve as a rehashed unpleasant reminder of what we’re all facing. We get enough of that on a daily basis.

In terms of the season 3 plots, the V24 superhuman serum feels like old hat at this point (especially since it’s been recently explored in shows like “The Falcon And The Winter Soldier”). The addition of Soldier Boy (played by Jensen Ackles) offers up an enticing new storyline that yields surprising results at the end of the season (no spoilers here). As per usual, the best material tends to involve Billy Butcher (superbly played by Karl Urban), Homelander (Anthony Starr) and Starlight (Erin Moriarty). The show is finally getting to a place where Starlight is making big choices.
