Slotherhouse Blu-ray Review

“Slotherhouse” is not fun bad. It’s just bad.

“Slotherhouse” is a tongue in cheek horror movie that revolves around a poached sloth taken from Panama that ends up in the possession of a sorority girl (Emily). You see, Emily (Lisa Ambalavanar) wants to become the sorority President, but she faces stiff competition from Brianna (Sydney Craven). She hopes that sloth (which she makes the sorority mascot) will gain her election votes and popularity. At first everything seems to go swimmingly until the sloth discovers Emily has a picture with the cruel poacher. Now, the sloth seeks murderous revenge against, well, everyone.

After seeing the trailer for “Slotherhouse,” it looked as if this could be a fun campy horror romp. The title alone really sells the movie. Alas, director Matthew Goodhue and writer Bradley Fowler completely drop the ball. Instead of ramping up the comedy, inventing creative kills, and doing anything remotely interesting with the premise, the two essentially create a lame sorority movie that desperately tries to appeal to the college crowd. Even when the massacre begins, you’ll be bored stiff unless you find a sloth taking a selfie to be the height of horror comedy. The entire project just feels rushed for consumer consumption. There’s no characterization here (nobody even seems all that concerned by the massive body count), the sloth antics are far too cartoonish, and far too many deaths happen off screen. It’s just one big missed opportunity.

The only positive aspect here is that the sloth is not CGI, but rather a puppet. Seeing the practical creation wreak havoc definitely gave this shlocky horror film some credibility. It’s just a shame the adorable murderous sloth was wasted in this forgettable slasher.
