Star Wars: The High Republic: Jedi Brave In Every Way Book Review

“Star Wars: The High Republic: Jedi Brave In Every Way” offers up valuable life lessons for young readers.

Written by father-daughter team Charles and Rosemary Soule and illustrated by Valerie Valdivia, “Star Wars: The High Republic: Jedi Brave In Every Way” is a children’s picture book. The story takes place on the Starlight Beacon and centers on Grand Master Yoda helping 3 Jedi Younglings (Bree, Jon and Toko) who are fearful about becoming Jedi Knights. Yoda enlists the help of Jedi padawan Burryaga who reveals a story about how he overcame a fear of climbing. After that, Yoda, Burryaga and the Younglings embark on an adventure to Geonosis, Mon Cala, Elphrona and Utapu. It is at these locations where the Younglings confront their fears.

One of the wonderful things about the Star Wars literary universe is that there are stories for every age group. There are teen tales, adult stories, all ages stories and stories aimed at younger children such as ‘Jedi Brave In Every Way.’ In addition to being a story full of exciting locations, ‘Jedi’ offers up important life lessons about bravery and overcoming fears such as Toko facing his fear of bugs. It’s always refreshing to see a story that promotes such positive and educational messages. Learning these life lessons through a Star Wars adventure is an added bonus to be sure.

Valerie Valdivia (who is a digital and traditional illustrator) does a commendable job with the artwork. Some of the character art is cutesy (see Yoda’s smiles), but given that this story has such a positive vibe it only makes sense. There are a few backgrounds that are a bit bare like on Geonosis, but it’s likely that the foreground art was meant to be the primary focus so that can be overlooked.
